to separate shutter release and advance (... or not?)

i may very well be rehashing an already well-covered topic.

(apologies in advance if overly redundant ...)

it's been observed and commented by many that the noise and/or the duration of the noise generated by the 8 during the shutter release/advance stage is more noticeable than would be preferred (at least in some shooting situations).

and it sure seems that the more time i spend with the cam the more i appreciate the above observations and sentiment.

would it be possible/practical to break out the shutter release and advance into two separate steps from the currently single-step process?

(if the shutter release and advance steps are fully discrete camera functions, coupled only by the code in the software, then perhaps it may be possible.)

my thinking is that through a user-selectable menu option, in "S" shooting mode only, one would specify the mode of operation: a single or a dual step process.

if a dual step process is selected then the photog would have to depress the shutter release button twice and sequentially (once to advance and once to release).

the shutter advance step (being the louder and lengthier of the two) can be performed at a separate point in time and/or place outside of the photo capture setting/location/space (if so desired).

and now the "punchline":

A) is this doable?

B) is this a reasonable/practical solution to the "perceived" noise issue?

(and i appreciate that not everyone perceives this to be an issue)

C)and if is doable/practical, is this something that Leica would seriously contemplate and contemplate implementing?

what say you ??

ok ... now back to the regularly scheduled program :)

It has been said before... i think it was in Guys laundry list. Anyway I'm 100% sure Leica is aware of this customer wish. What comes of it only time will tell.

I have fond memories of my R8 doing just that at my choice. (Now where is that camera? )

Yes. I think it would be a considerable advantage at times. Of course, I have no idea if it is doable. But then, a digital Leica M was impossible, but Leica did it.;)

i must have missed that part of the laundry list.

but good to know that it's there and that Leica

is very likely aware of this feature request.

Even better would be the option of a manual wind lever but obviously that isn't going to be possible with the M8.

the lever would have been a nice retro-touch.

at the very least it would have made for a more

secure anchor point for handling purposes. :)

though i suspect an outboard motor drive would

have been necessary for a motorized advance

(increasing the size and the cost of the outfit).

I am STRONGLY in favor of decoupling the shutter release from the rewind motor action. The noise of the M8 has proven to be disturbing and actually embarrassing to me in several situations. My M6 was much better for silent shooting (though not as brilliant as my Konica Hexar in its time). Forget a mechanical solution. Just have as a choice in the settings a two press shooting sequence: The first press fires the shutter; the second rewinds--when it's safe to do so without drawing unwelcome attention. How lovely that would be!

i think we're on the same page in this regard.

hopefully Leica is paying attention and will seriously contemplate

including such functionality into a not-too-distant-future f/w release.
