First impression!

WOW, I took a shot with M240 and 35mm summicron in dim light, range finder focused and shot at f2, at 1/3rd of a second, it was SHARP not 100% if you zoom all the way in but really really usable, with the M8/9 I never dare go under 1/15 hand held!!!

Not sure if this was luck or a better shutter! Or maybe even a better grip to the camera!

here is the link to the picture, it's DNG converted to B&W with VSCO (HP5+) preset without the 'grain' in Lightroom 5 from the creative cloud.

Okay first impressions of todays little photowalk around Antwerp:

Damn that shutter release button is the finest I've ever felt, I may even like it over the M6's shutter release button.

Every time I chimp a picture, I'm amazed by how crisp the screen is, and how spot on my focus is with all my lenses!

The shutter sound sounds very electronically to me, I like it but it doesn't have the 'M' sound it used to have with the real *CLACK* I read somewhere (can't remember where anymore) that the sound changes over time after some actuations... wondering if thats true :D

Live view is fun, I used a Visoflex III with 50mm Summicron using the Visoflex as a macro extender, it worked but I'm waiting to try this with the 90mm I got. Focussing was really easy of course with 'mirror lock/up' on the Visoflex and focussing using live view on the camera screen. (Don't have the Olympus EVF2 yet)

I immediately installed the new firmware so I can't comment on before/after on the white balance, but I like the colours allot with the current firmware!

Build quality is really good, it feels like a tank, and all the buttons etc feel really solid! I'm thinking about getting the Lem/Ler Novoflex adapter, for some R glass!!

All pictures I take with the M (Typ 240) that go on Flickr will reside in a set that is only for the 'M240' for easy viewing they include comments on editing and exif data, PS if it shows Leica Summilux-M it's actually the Sonar f/1,5 by Carl Zeiss used it on a few pictures.

Take a look if you'd like!!

Looks great! but how do you cancel out the grain? That specific filter has a lot of grain! Is there a special method for doing this?

Move the Grain slider in the develop module down to 0 after applying the preset? :p

Or better yet, make a develop preset that only sets the amount of Grain to 0 and apply that preset after applying the film preset.

I totally agree. From M8 to M8.2/M9 I've noticed a considerably better shutter with a gain of 1 stop, but with M240 you can really set 1/8 safely with short lenses and a bit longer with longer lenses. A great step forward.

Nice shot and congratulation for your new M.

What a great first impression - I personally like a nice clack in a camera too but I heard that the sound in the M10 is almost silent on the street.

How often do you get an image with the WB that's totally off?

I love your images - especially the one of your eye, I love how sharp it is.

Agree the build quality is a big step above the M9 to me.

I own a chrome M9P and a M(240). I don't see the build of the new M as an improvement of the almost perfect build quality of the M9P. But the M(240) does equal M9P in build quality. Leica's M's are robust to say the least.

If one considers the Lug straps... The M is a step backwards. But I' sure the folks at Leica will eventually get those set right.

What's an M10?

The WB is much better after the last FW update. The silent is more silent and has a sharpness to it instead of all the whiring sounds of the M9.

The only really silent shutter camera I use is the RX-1.

(Genuine lol, no sarcasm) LOL, An M10 is what I call it cause I cant be bothered to type 240 with accuracy as I touch type and if you want, I'll just call it the M.

On a more serious note - I didn't understand the whirr of the M8 and M9 - while it was pretty cool etc and had a really nice sound, I didn't get what was going on inside that made the whirr so necessary (Leica newb atm.)

I was soooo considering an RX1, I heard that the new Panasonic GX7 is completely silent save for the aperture blades that move if you have the lens stopped down too narrow.

Does anyone have (or can point me in the right direction) to see a comparison of the WB before and after the FW update? (don't wanna hijack, sorry)

Agree. M is easy and correct. The RX-1 leaf shutter blades are all I see when taking an image. Just about no sound.

Re FW WB upgrade. There must be plenty of discussions here. Did you try the "search" button up top?

Thanks for the compliments!! I've only really used the camera at the v2.xxx firmware and haven't used it with the V1.xxx firmware and I'm pretty happy with the white balance... for critical work I use a grey card.
