v1.02 lag - wait for the red light

An observation that may assist someone.

I upgraded to v1.102 Thursday evening and have had the opportunity to shoot for a couple of days. One medium-level annoyance has been uncovered.

When I use the Kingston 2GB SD cards, which are on the approved list, I get 1-2% faulty writes. The symptom will be a file size of 2MB when writing all DNGs, normally 10MB each. The file is unreadable, and the image is lost. Yes, both cards were put through full formats in camera, and when I ran chkdsk after the read error, both cards had the troubled images deleted. This has happened with 2 different Kingston 2GB SD cards.

The solution is simple, if not annoying. When you start the camera, wait 1 second before shooting. When you shut down the camera, wait 1 second after the write light is off. Now I need to retrain my muscle memory not to shoot a newly turned-on camera as soon as lifting it to my eye, and not to automatically turn the camera off without checking the red led first.

I will try other cards, other sizes as time permits.

i have noticed the 2mb corrupt DNG in the past.

i normally carry my camera (regardless of brand) over my shoulder regardless of the weather when out and about. so to preserve the battery power my technique is to keep the camera off, and when i want to shoot, i quickly turn the camera on, snap away, turn it off (while it is still writing) and let it finish writing on its own.

ever since i noticed that i got an occasional corrupt file, i have left my leica on and auto power off. it drains the power, but at least i get my shots. i think i first noticed this with fw 1.092

have not "tested" fw 1.102....

its a minor bug i think, but as long as people are aware of this, there isnt a huge cause for alarm i don't think.

hope this helps.
