luigi bertolotti Posted October 23, 2013 Share #3 Posted October 23, 2013 Very interesting pictures of a a device that is undoubtly integral part of the ideas that led Barnack to conceive the Leica Camera; the Cine Camera is well described in Van Hasbrooeck book, too (he quotes also Malcom Taylor restoration) ; it is still historically undefined if the Ur-Leica was conceived mainly, or only, as a "meter" for cine film or also (or mainly) as a camera to take still pictures with a minimal weight to carry around (is reported that Barnack, to avoid the weight of a number of 13x18 cm plates, modified a 13x18 camera to take a number of small negatives)
gmpphotography Posted October 24, 2013 Author Share #4 Posted October 24, 2013 I have found evidence that the Ur Leica was built by Barnack after he had made a small camera for exposure testing purposes. It never made sense to me for Barnack to make a camera with twice the negative size as the common cine cameras, including variable shutter speeds while his cine camera was limited to a fixed exposure time of 1/40 sec. For instance in the 1950 edition of Kisselbach's "Kleines Leica Buch" he clearly states that it were the relatively good results obtained from the exposure tesing camera that convinced Barnack to design the Ur-Leica. gmpphotography Posted October 24, 2013 Author Share #5 Posted October 24, 2013 ...(is reported that Barnack, to avoid the weight of a number of 13x18 cm plates, modified a 13x18 camera to take a number of small negatives) The Barnack modified 5x7 camera had been bought by a clector in Florida who later sold his entire collection, including the 5x7 camera to two other collectors, one from Rochester, NY and the other from Ohio. The itmes were devided by the two collectors with the one from Ohio keeping the 5x7 camera.
