I was thinking of including Armenia as a side trip, but transport is very difficult (indirect) due to conflicts with Turkey. We're considering Greece or another Turkish location, but now that you mention it, Jordan would also be wonderful.

I checked on the Turkish Airlines price Heathrow-Istanbul-Amman-Heathrow and it's actually cheaper to do two trips. EasyJet flies to Amman from Gatwick and so I think we're going to do that one sometime in Spring. Maybe stay in Turkey for longer and do something like Steve is suggesting.

Maybe a group of us could get together and arrange something either before or after the actual challenge .... we'd certainly be interested.

Cheers, Tom

As an aid to UK members I got the BBC to make this three part series about Byzantium starting next month...

BBC Four - Byzantium: A Tale of Three Cities, Episode 1

Looks like another BBC4 "worth the liscence fee by itself" programme that may give some people ideas about what, and where, to shoot.

However, any accommodation recommendations?

The budget is too important.

I can advise some hotels:

Splurge (>300 Euros/night)

- Ciragan Palace Kempinski - for the best view

- The Ritz-Carlton

- Four Seasons Hotel Sultanahmet - for the best service

Upper Class (200-300 Euros/night)

- Grand Hyatt

- Divan Hotel at Elmadag

- Pera Palace Hotel - for the best history

Mid-range (100-200 Euros/night)

- The Marmara Pera - you must try Milka

- The House Hotel at Galatasaray (or, at Nisantasi)

- Gezi Hotel Bosphorus

Budget (<100 Euros/night)

- Grand Hotel de Londres

- Point Hotel

We have a member on the ground in Istanbul who is going to sort out a restaurant when the time comes and make sure that we don't pay "tourist" prices.

Sorry, but it's true.

I stayed at Grand Hyatt two years ago. It's a well-known hotel in Istanbul. They offered 130 Euros/night for Turkish citizens. The rate was include breakfast for two. Actually, the regular price was 200-250 Euros for only room.

Somehow I have missed this thread, despite originally voting (for Tokyo) in it. However, being a great Turkey fan, especially of Istanbul, I approve the choice, despite it STILL being so bloody far from home. I have no idea if I will ever make it there. It will be a short notice choice like Wetzlar for me which was done on four days decision.

I can definitely state that Istanbul is one of those destinations that offers Soooo much photographically that allocating extra time there will be richly rewarded. I'm not going to give away specific locations (just in case I make it and want to shoot competitively :D), but there will be no shortage of excitement for your camera, or self.

The Pera Palace in Taxim is fabulous for at least one night's accommodation. I remember joining the belly dancer for the floor show and being given some "consideration" afterwards by the management. There are a number of interesting rooms there dedicated to people such as Agatha Christie and Ataturk, amongst others who stayed there. Management said they would dedicate a room to me after my performance, but I doubt it really happened. However, I am confident the local deros will remember me kindly and I them.

I was enjoying the morning until you posted this. Now I can't get the thought of you belly dancing out of my head ..... not a pretty thought;)

Whatever, hope to see you next year in Istanbul.

Cheers, tom

  • 1 month later...

Just booked a flight for the guv and I ....... three hundred and twenty odd quid on British Airways from Heathrow; which I didn't think was bad at all. (Please; NO responses saying you got a First Class for £9.50, with a £4 rebate.)

We're flying out on Thursday the 9th and back on Sunday the 19th, so will now be looking for some sort of side trip within Turkey.

Sorry Robert, decided not to drive, as we've already past the "start off date" for the Land Rover.

Looking forward to it.

Cheers, Tom

I don't think I'll be able to make this year.

It's been a couple of years since I've been to Perpignan for the Visa Pour l'Image festival, so I've decided to go there this September. Since that's only a month before the Istanbul trip I won't be able to do both.

Have a great time, and I look forward to seeing the pics.

Dagmar and myself have never been to Istanbul before. Upon StS's recommendation were are currently looking for a hotel in the Sultan Ahmet Area - the orange circle. Any more suggestions for this area?

StS: The last time in Istanbul, I stayed in this place, the neighbouring building is the Haghia Sophia.

Would it be fine to look for hotels in the purple area as well? Where are the other participants heading to or plan to stay? andybarton mentioned that they have booked a hotel in the orange area as well. I'm not aware of the local commuting infrastructure therefore it's difficult for me to make assumptions of time needed to go from place A to place B.

Looking forward to see you all in October,

Carsten and Dagmar

It would be good if possible to suggest a couple of hotels and have the majority of members stay at those. Istanbul is so big that if we all choose on our own we will end up in different hotels and logistically this will be a hassle.... Maybe our member on the ground could make some suggestions?
