randyman Posted October 20, 2013 Share #1 Posted October 20, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello, everyone - As the subject announces, I'm a newcomer to the exalted realms of Leicadom. My M 240 arrived on Wednesday, and my first lens - a Summilux-M 50mm ASPH - arrived Friday. So this afternoon, I went outside for the first time as a Leica user. First, I thought people might be interested in what I did in an effort to help ensure a little security. Friday afternoon, I had the interior of the baseplate laser-engraved with my ID info, hoping that if worst came to worst, my camera might somehow make its way back to me. I think it came out very well. Here are a few of today's images. Let me say up front that I've been shooting on the tiny sensors in Blackmagic Design cameras, with a crop factor of 2.3 to 2.8 - so the first thing I did was get that shallow DOF thing out of my system. Yes, every single image that follows was shot with the lens wide open, just because I could. I promise to do better in the future. leica1 - Page 1 I have to say; I love this camera and lens - it's a dream come true, and I'm just getting started. I'm looking forward to learning from all of you. As they say, the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. Here we go!

StephenPatterson Posted October 20, 2013 Share #2 Posted October 20, 2013 Welcome to the party Randy. You certainly have that "Shallow DOF" look down, but I'm sure you will discover that the aperture ring on that 50 Summilux ASPH turns quite nicely, so enjoy your new Leica glass at f/1.4 and beyond. As for the laser engraving it did come out very nice, and who knows it might just come in handy if you accidentally leave your precious new camera in a taxi cab or at lunch and it is discovered by an honest person. Can't hurt...but I think the chances of you leaving your new baby behind are slim, and the chances of recovery if such a thing were to occur slimmer still. Again, congratulations and welcome. wda Posted October 20, 2013 Share #5 Posted October 20, 2013 Welcome to the forum. You lost no time adding to security; though the best advice is never to let it go out of your sight when not secure at home.

randyman Posted October 22, 2013 Author Share #9 Posted October 22, 2013 Thanks to all - I give my solemn word that I've purged the need to experiment with shooting wide-open from my system; the 200-some shots you didn't see cured me of that. This Summilux sharpens up amazingly by f/5.6 or so! I'm starting to use a good monopod to help with longer exposures. I do love this camera - it's magic. And you've all been kind by not ripping my first shots to shreds - thanks.
