AlanG Posted April 16, 2007 Share #21 Posted April 16, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Thanks guys for all the nice photos of D.C. guys. I have a question. About what week do the cherry blossoms bloom there? Cherry blossoms come out around the first week of April, but it depends on the temperature. Sometimes they come out earlier and sometimes later. There is a two week "Cherry Blossom Festival" with various activities. See this: Official Website of the National Cherry Blossom Festival - Washington, DC Washington DC is one of the most heavily photographed places on earth so if you want to come up with something different, you better work at it. stuny Posted April 16, 2007 Share #22 Posted April 16, 2007 Chris - Thank you for the kind words re: the Washington photos on our site. I shot those with an R8/DMR/28-70. This was my first DMR outing, and I shot everything in minimally compressed jpgs. A month later, in Chartres (and in Paris) I finally used RAW for the first time, partly at the encouragement to do so by Forum members, but largely at the encouragement of my dear friend Gerard, whom a number of you know from the Forum. chris_tribble Posted April 16, 2007 Author Share #23 Posted April 16, 2007 Well, my oh my but it's cold and raw in DC at the moment. Took the Metro to Smithsonian and walked back to Dupont via the National Portait Gallery (a lovely place) and then up 14th to the Adamson gallery - which was CLOSED ... David - will you be open this week? Going to go back down to check out some more sights if I can bring myself to face the dust and wind again (glad I was able to buy a beanie from a street stall...). Some shots can be found at: Washington. I'll put some more up if I have time. And the verdict on the M8? Rock solid, It's small, it's discreet, it's light, it fits in a Domke satchel along with half a dozen lense. I'm back in the good old days with my M6 and ALL the fun of being able to do this sort of immediate posting. If I was in the proverbial rapidly descending balloon, the first thing that would go over the side would be the Canon gear, last to go would by the M8 + the 28 f2 ASPH. dspeltz Posted April 17, 2007 Share #24 Posted April 17, 2007 You and I missed each other by an hour or two. I have to post these. They are not art. They are Miss Piggy in the Cherry Blossom Parade on Saturday. Leica 24mm with Ir filter and firmware upgrade 1 hour prior. Welcome, dear visitor! chris_tribble Posted April 20, 2007 Author Share #25 Posted April 20, 2007 Love the back view. Back to London tonight. Used the M at a reading by N Irish poets at National Geographic Live - 75 Lux - worked perfectly at ISO 640 hand held. The first one of Keiran Carson was difficult to meter (and I didn't want to check the histogram for fear of disturbing those around me) but it's still more than useable. The other is Paul Muldoon - prolific and acclaimed. A wonderful poet. I am pleased with the image. COULDN'T have done this with a DSLR. Sitting in the front row and disturbing no one. Thanks to all who took an interest in my little trip. Best Welcome, dear visitor! Eikonphoto Posted April 20, 2007 Share #26 Posted April 20, 2007 Although the weather is lovely here in DC today, IF you are doing the Vietnam, Korean memorials, try to go at night, especially if it's raining as that is when they are most powerful. The rain dripping from the infantryman at the Korean memorial especially ........ get the Noctilux out. The Airforce memorial is fabulous, perfect for the 12CV ...... probably great today around 7-8pm. Lighting is everything ...... have fun. Mountaineer-American Posted April 27, 2007 Share #28 Posted April 27, 2007 The National Cathedral (properly The Cathedral Church of St. Peter & St. Paul), a spectacular rendering in gothic. Every cathedral is unique and in some ways I like it better than anything I have seen in Europe because it is all of a style. It was built in one go, the short span of 87 years, not over a period of centuries. Take your wide-angle lenses. "Don't start vast projects with half-vast ideas."
