Case and spool for Leica 1 Model A

Recommended Posts

Advertisement (gone after registration)

I have a Leica I Model A and need a case. I have a case for a 111f but the screw thread is 3/8 whereas I need the smaller 1/4 inch. I cant seem to get an adapter to reduce 3/8ths to 1/4 incidentally

Will a Leica 1 Model A fit in a Leica 111 a c or f or will the case be too big?

I also need to get a spool. Will any Leica spool work in the Leica 1 Model A. I have a Leica iiif spool in there at the moment.

Many thanks for any advice once more

John

Yes and yes: the camera fits but the case is oversized and inconvenient to use.

See the recent thread about IIIg/IIIf spools.

Hello John,

Welcome to the Forum.

If you can't find the 1/4 - 20 to 3/8 - 16 adapter you need right now, why not go to your local hardware store & buy a 1/4 - 20 to 3/8 - 16 coupling & attach it to your 1/4 - 20 tripod head for now.

All you need to attach the coupling is: 1 BRASS 3/8 - 16 screw long enough to fit & couple to the coupling with about 6mm sticking out. Measure the depth of the hole in your camera & subtract 2mm to know the correct ammount. Buy a brass screw. Cut its head cut off. Then finish the top of the remaing screw thread properly by smoothing the cut off top to work correctly.

Brass screws won't damage things the way steel one's will. Aluminium screws are not stong enough. It doesn't particurately matter what type of METAL (No plastic, etc) the coupling itself is made of.

Total cost will most likely be: 1 or 2 Pounds, Euros or Dollars.

If you use a tripod screw that is 3/8" instead of 1/4" you will have slightly more than twice the area of cross section of screw. This makes the attachment that much more rigid & strong.

Some people convert their 1/4 - 20 equipment to 3/8 - 16 for that reason.

Best Regards,

Michael

You don't say where you are that means where I note they are available may mean your shipping cost is extreme.

On the basis of a good start look for tripod bushing adapter and ask at the nearest older Leica dealer they will have a box of bits. Or buy new:

General Brand 3/8" to 1/4"-20 Tripod Reducer NPTRB B&H

Avoid the word Leica unless you enjoy paying double the going rate :D

Hi Folks I have now got a case with the small thread cheaply from Spain. The guy threw in a spool which works, for a small fee too. It appears to be the standard Leica pre 111g spool so, I think that answers that question.

I now wonder about cases. My new case is in very good condition. Is there anyway of dating it. Although it has the small thread the case does say Germany not New York.

The case also doesn't have a deep lens cover, ie you would have to retract the lens to shut the case unlike other cases I have seen that would allow closure with the lens not retracted.

Ever ready cases came in a wide variety to fit cameras with various size lenses mounted. Like all Leica gear the early ones were name coded for ordering. You probably should narrow down what you have by the descriptions then google for pictures against the code.

The best list is probably here, unless someone has a better link. :D

Start at EPZOO and work down :D and down and down !!

Yes, I'm afraid so. If only they had stamped them with a name or number

Even the finders etc had leather cases if you find one of those detecting which accessory it was for is near impossible if they are separated. The partitioned cases are really nice and worth looking for.
