LarryM Posted April 14, 2007 Share #1 Posted April 14, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) The photo below was taken with a CM using Fujicolor 200. In the first photo, I have only converted to B&W using Apple iPhoto. In the second I have cropped down a bit from the top and used iPhoto's sharpen tool. I'd appreciate any comments on composition or cropping - or anything else. Also, I've never had the opportunity to use Photoshop. What else could I do with this photo using Photoshop? Thanks for looking!

azzo Posted April 14, 2007 Share #2 Posted April 14, 2007 Hello Harry, Nice image 1st of all. Please take what i'm going to suggest as conctructive. The 1st thing I notice is that your image needs a slight rotation to the right to straighten the tower. Secondly, I think that the large boat on the right is distracting and so i'd crop from the right untill the large number 2, but still retaining the nice building at the back. By doing this, then you can crop slightly more from the top, closer to the tower. As regarding the sharpen, I personally prefer the original as it is softer, but that's a matter of taste. Try these few adjustments and see if the image works better this way for you. Azzo
LarryM Posted April 14, 2007 Author Share #3 Posted April 14, 2007 Azzo, Thank you for your comments. The changes you suggested have been done on the unsharpened image and pased below. I like your suggested cropping of the larger boat - the life rings on the rail of that craft seemed distracting. Did I get the correct amount of right rotation? I attempted to line it up the best I could with the right edge of the image. It is interesting to note that the removal of the large boat at the right makes the building in the background (San Giorgio Maggiore) appear to be more distant - at least to me. Somehow, I expected the crop to make the building seem closer. Thanks again! Larry
JE Posted April 14, 2007 Share #4 Posted April 14, 2007 Larry, You've captured an atmosphere that only exists in Venice...and captured it well. Thanks for sharing. Jonathan
azzo Posted April 14, 2007 Share #5 Posted April 14, 2007 Larry, Perfect. The haze in your 1st post and in your adjusted version, make San Giorgio Maggiore look more distant. It was slightly lost when sharpened, and that is why I preferred the unsharpened version. Again, nicely seen and captured. Azzo
stuny Posted April 15, 2007 Share #6 Posted April 15, 2007 Larry - With Ivan's crop and rotation suggests this is superb. BTW: You can better judge the effects of rotation by increasing the image view so that you can scroll to the edge to see if the building is straight or not.
