Nick De Marco Posted October 6, 2013 Share #1 Posted October 6, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Any other Leica Users use one? I just bought one the other day. Fancied something compact that I could always have with me, like my iPhone, but can take reasonable photos. Was tempted by the new Leica C, and the idea of wifi, and a zoom starting with a 28mm lens. But when I started researching it looked to me like the Sony RX 100 was by far the best quality digital, with a Zeiss lens that is f1.8 at 28mm. A look online showed me the photo quality is quite spectacular, for a compact that is. I had no idea compacts can now do this. I have a Leica M Typ 240 which is my main camera. I also have a Fuji X100s which I find a very high iq and good quality fixed small, though not quite compact, camera. I bought the RX 100 and so far I am really impressed. Its small enough to take everywhere. The image quality, even at night/high iso. looks great on my Mac - I haven't tried a print yet though. I mainly use it at 28mm and there the lens is very fast (f1.8). It's silent and the AF seems fast (perhaps faster than the X100S). I can control it remotely with my iPhone and the video looks very good so far. Looking forward to using it more, and shall post a review of it on my Rangefinder Chronicles site in the near future. In the meantime I am interested to see if other Leica users have tried it, and what they think. Thanks Nick
Advertisement Posted October 6, 2013 Posted October 6, 2013 Hi Nick De Marco, Take a look here Sony RX100 Mk 2. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
kdriceman Posted October 7, 2013 Share #2 Posted October 7, 2013 I did have one, a MkII, but only kept it a couple months. I bought it for essentially the same reason as you, but I found that I rarely used it, opting instead for one of my rangefinders or my Nex 6. Although it is a really great compact camera I just don't like shooting without a viewfinder (and the EVF is an extra $450) and it isn't enough smaller than my Nex 6 for me to use it that much. The zoom lens is a nice feature, though and, as you said, it delivers good image quality. Enjoy.
JesusReynolds Posted October 7, 2013 Share #3 Posted October 7, 2013 I had an M5 working for quite a long time. I got it from my father. The picture quality it produced is so awesome i just miss it.
yadillah Posted October 7, 2013 Share #4 Posted October 7, 2013 I have just purchased an RX100M2 for the same reasons. I wanted a pocketable camera with a zoom which covers most of my requirements. I also use an M9. This is my main camera. I have not done much work with the Sony yet, but what I have done is most impressive. I have ordered the add on grip. I think this will improve the handling. For the past 4 years I have been using a Panasonic LX3. A great camera, but surpassed by the Sony. Malcolm
250swb Posted October 8, 2013 Share #5 Posted October 8, 2013 I have the Mk1 version, and it's a wonderful little camera. As ever when I buy a small P&S it doesn't get as much use as I think it will get. But the ability to pack it in with my Monochrom or 4x5 kit, and because of its high image quality not feel it is only an emergency camera for colour, means I do use it more than previous P&S cameras. I just wish that now we don't need a bit of inertial weight to help hold a camera steady, because we have IS, the manufacturers could drop the 'well built' heft, and make them out of carbon or something very light. Even as a pocket sized camera it is like carrying half a brick. But don't let that put you off, its worth it. Steve
Paul Reading Posted October 8, 2013 Share #6 Posted October 8, 2013 Does it have the battery drain problem of the RX100?

Paul Reading Posted October 9, 2013 Share #8 Posted October 9, 2013 The RX100 drains its batter flat in about 7 days of non-use. I have to return mine to get it fixed. But many are reporting that even after repair they still go flat. There are lots of wild theories about the cause from the shock detection system, to the soft cases to people reporting that the cameras turn them selves on. In my case I don't believe any of this to be true. Mine sits in a draw and after a week I can take no more than 4 photos then the battery dies. I always have to keep a spare battery to use the camera. You can Google it.
250swb Posted October 9, 2013 Share #9 Posted October 9, 2013 Mine doesn't, the battery lasts for weeks without use. Perhaps it was something they fixed at some point. Probably the reason I haven't heard about and needed to Google it is because I haven't encountered it. Steve

It so happens that people like looking at those more than at what is more and more called "stills".

Just had it in the glove compartment of my car for a couple of weeks parked outdoors at the airport to find out to my surprise that the battery would still show a full charge when I turned it on. Guest jvansmit Posted November 26, 2013 Share #15 Posted November 26, 2013 I have the RX100 as a companion to my M240, and am hugely impressed with it. I bought a Ricoh GR a while back but now much prefer the RX100 which has a faster AF at night, & wider max aperture with the added versatility of a zoom. The image quality at higher ISO is way beyond my expectation, and it's more pocketable than the Ricoh GR too. A great little camera !
