I am pretty well happy with my M8, if anything the only things I don't really like is the covering and the fact that my screen has lots of minor scratching (this is how it came to me, I may try and polish them out). I could trade up to the M8.2 and there are still some out there with warranty on them, ex demo refurbs that sort of stuff. The price difference here though is only around another £700 or so to the cheap end of the M9. Just wondering here and now in late 2013 what you would do? most of the comparisons date back a few years so I wanted to ask this question for today. BTW whilst those couple of points about my M8 annoy me and should be improved on the M8.2 the supposed improvements on the M9 are interesting and tempting in their own right. The old dilemma of need vs desire is of course a fair one but still I can think of a couple of use cases where those improvements would help but its more edge case stuff for me as I very rarely shoot in the dark etc. etc. Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

In all honesty there is very little difference between the M8 and M8-2 - nothing significant in usage terms. Given this and the fact that the rear lcd is not repairable I'd suggest an M9 is the far more logical option, even though I still shoot and enjoy using my M8-2, and like the results from it too. I explained my rationale in this post. YMMV. Jeff Edit...I should add that the subsequently discovered LCD screen issue would not change my mind; that's why I carry comprehensive insurance, which would fund a brand new M in the event my M8.2 could not be repaired. Probably shouldn't admit to it but one of the big things that sold me on this system was when I first pixel peeped images in ACR, I just couldn't believe just how good it is at 100%. Very recently I bought a 28mm Elmarit APSH as it was to good a deal to pass up, really bowled over with that lens and it has reminded me that I could actually be happy with just that and a 75 summarit as this would give me a 37/100 set which covers more than 90% of anything I would want to do at low cost and very high quality. Both of those lenses are current bargain buys on the second hand market. I guess I can't help the feeling that the less is more ethic is what this system is all about, I have to admit that part of what puts me off the M9 is the feeling I will end up spending a load on lenses to match it, maybe that says more about me and GAS than a real issue though. BTW I have a 50 planar, CV 25 Skopar and CV 90 APO Lanthar as well but could easily sell some combination of those to get a 75 if I was to stick with a crop solution. I don't mind those inner frame lines btw for 75, if anything I find my eye drawn to them when shooting the 50. OTOH I have found the inaccurate frame lines on the M8 to be infuriating sometimes. 2m frame lines could be a big improvement for me based on what others have said. If you can live with the crop factor and in my case I find I prefer this for portraiture and for most of the photography that I do then a.m. 8.2 represents very good value. M8.2 has a scratch resistant rear screen and also a stealth mode which I find very valuable as it seems to reduce camera shake. The image quality and also the black-and-white properties seem excellent and again this for me makes the camera a good value proposition. PS. Consider a 50 mm Pre Aspheric Summilux on the camera as well, as although it's a little more expensive produces excellent results. Hope this helps.
