chris_livsey Posted September 29, 2013 Share #1 Posted September 29, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) A member has reported a second button rewind M2 in the M1 batch for 1959 Currently Wiki notes 956889 as a button rewind M2. The member reports 956865 is also M2 Button rewind. http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m7-mp-film-m/302187-leica-m2-model-odd-combination-features.html#post2517955 Although using my correct details Wiki will not let me in to edit. Could this be done by a member with access please? Also there is a later serial M2, 1143044 making it 1966, on ebay which is surely far too late for a button rewind? Any comments? A top plate swop perhaps? http://www.ebay.com/itm/Leica-M2-Silver-Rangefinder-Camera-Button-Rewind-with-Self-timer-12D084-/180902577488

luigi bertolotti Posted September 30, 2013 Share #2 Posted September 30, 2013 Imho, if there is no document about possible past repairs, is impossible to say which happened to the M2 1.143.044 : surely, its number belongs, as you say, to the era of lever-rewind bodies... and even not the firts times of it : many M2 (as other Ms) were heavily used for years and years, and maintained several times, be it by Leitz or by other labs : expecially in years well after the end of production, many labs had in house spares of various kinds and, when one was more interested in functionality than originality, they could make repairs which resulted in "hybrid" models... for instance, when I had an issue on my M2 VF/RF, 10 years ago about, a good repair shop in Italy proposed to me, at a good price, to exchange it with a M4's one : they had one, a perfect spare, in house, and it would have been a good business both for them and for me to use it.
