DaveEP Posted April 13, 2007 Share #121  Posted April 13, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I need help. Just went to the Leica AG site (German as well as English) and downloaded 1.102, but my laptop refuses to open the download. I have a Power Book G4 and use Safari. When I double klick the download, which is just a bland square, Safari comes up and says there is no application to open the zip file. Strangely, I downloaded 1.092 some time ago with no problems and installed in on my M8. Since I have booked a trip to Bali and Japan starting Wednesday next week, I am somewhat disconcerted. Can anyone help? I am completely computer ignorant, just use it for e-mail, internet, to make slides for talks etc., but no technical ability. Thanks, Teddy  Would you like me to e-mail the file to you (I am also ona mac and had no problem)...?

Thanks, Teddy  teddy- your setup is the same as mine and i was able to download with no problem and no unzip required. if the file you downloaded has a '.upd' suffix then you're all set to simply copy that to your formatted memory card, insert into the camera, and perform update. you do not need to open the downloaded update file. hope this helps.  john

Theodor Heinrichsohn Posted April 13, 2007 Share #126 Â Posted April 13, 2007 Thanks to DaveEP and jcbjr for your assistance. It is truly marvellous to receive such advice from the States and the UK in record time! I successfully downloaded 1.102 using jcbjr's advice before replying to DaveEP and can save the latter the trouble of e-mailing me. Truly grateful for your extremely speedy and effective help. Bye the way, Andreas, whom I had e-mailed for help immediately replied and suggested I ask on the Forum. Very good advice indeed. Teddy
wlaidlaw Posted April 13, 2007 Share #127  Posted April 13, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi Dave,Yes, please, that would be great! Thanks for the super fast reply. Teddy  Theodor,  May I suggest to make your life easier in future, you could go to the StuffIt unzip Expander Deluxe shareware website and download the latest free version of Stuffit, which will unzip both .zip and .sit files. I have the deluxe (pay for it) version but that is only needed if you are going to zip files. This was missed out of Tiger although it was in Panther. Tiger sometimes fails to unzip files with its built in unzipper - Stuffit is much better and FREE.  Wilson
Guest guy_mancuso Posted April 13, 2007 Share #128 Â Posted April 13, 2007 Regarding the on/off switch on camera and having to hitthe shutter. If you turn the camera on the red dot flashes for almost 2 seconds the camera is able to shoot but the batterry inicator and frames remaing may not be on right away and reason is the M8 is reading the card to see how much data is left in the card and determines the remaining shots. So you don'thave to wait for that to turn on the camera is ready. Remember also a 4gb card takes longer to read also
chetccox Posted April 13, 2007 Share #129 Â Posted April 13, 2007 I have a 4gb card in my camera. When I turn the camera on the red light comes on immediately and does not flash. It stays on for less than 1 second and the camera buttons are then all immediately active.
Guest guy_mancuso Posted April 13, 2007 Share #130 Â Posted April 13, 2007 Exactly Chet but the top LCD just takes a little extra time to read the SD card but the camera is ready to fire or menu and such. This is normal
chetccox Posted April 13, 2007 Share #131 Â Posted April 13, 2007 You are right. The battery level shows in about 1 second, and the frames remaining in about 5. It will take a picture immediately.

So you don'thave to wait for that to turn on the camera is ready. Remember also a 4gb card takes longer to read also  The specific (odd since 1.091) behavior of my M8 is the following: 1. Turn on -- no response. I waited 20 seconds, for example. 2. Touch the shutter release; the red llight at the lower right of the review screen blinks. 3. About 1.5 seconds later the battery indicator and remaining image count appear. I am using a 2GB ridata 125x card.  I would reload 1.06 to see if the camera reverts to the original behavior but I don't have the firmware. Does anyone have a copy of 1.06 that they can send me?  BTW, I got an email from a 3rd owner whose M8 exhibits this behavior. He said I was not crazy, but I have to take his word for it. wparsonsgisnet Posted April 13, 2007 Share #134  Posted April 13, 2007 Bill try this for me. Turn on and fire shutter almost immediately  Guy, the shutter will not fire, although the red lights blinks immediately. After waiting a few seconds, touching the shutter does not cause the light to blink again and the shutter does fire.  I tried it again, power on and shutter immediately: no shutter fire. The red light blinks, as above. After this, the shutter does fire.  There are 3 of us with this problem. I don't know the exact pathology of their cameras, but mine worked just like all the others with firmware 1.06 (out of the box).  I tried one more thing. I powered on, waited 1 second and pressed the shutter. No shutter activation -- only a red light wink. Under the new firmware, there is definitely a two-setp turn-on process for this camera. The download took about 2 minutes and I got the message that the download was successful. Turned the M8 on and took a quick test picture. When I wanted to review the picture, I got a screen with black and white hnorizontal stripes. Turned the M8 off and then on again and now it works OK. At least that is the case with the 15 or so test pictures I shot out of the window.  Thanks again for the quick help. Teddy

For anybody that does only see the .upd file posted on their desktop, then the .ZIP file has been opened, uncompressed and probably is residing in the trash. I have gone in and pulled it out myself, as I tend to keep all of these sorts of downloads in a file for later use if needed, or if somebdody else needs it.  As someone else mentioned, adding Stuff-It Expander (free) to one's apps will take care of these sort of things for almost any kind of compressed file.  LJ
