Guest guy_mancuso Posted April 12, 2007 Share #5 Posted April 12, 2007 Here is some info Instructions for updating the LEICA M8 Firmware 1. Format a memory card in your LEICA M8. 2. Turn off the camera and insert the card into an SD card reader – either integrated or connected to your computer. (A reader is required for Firmware updates). 3. Download the Firmware file from the Leica M8 site using the “UPDATES” link and unzip the file. 4. Save the unzipped file m8-1_xx.upd at the top level of the card’s folder structure. xx stands for the version. Top level of card’s folder structure 5. Remove the card properly from your card reader, insert the card into the camera and close the bottom cover. Turn on the camera using the main switch and wait for at least 3 seconds before continuing with step 6. Confirm the prompt that appears in the monitor as to whether you want to update the Firmware on the camera to version 1.xx. The update process takes around 180s. You will then be prompted to restart the camera using the main switch. 7. Turn the camera off and back on again. Note: If the battery does not have sufficient charge, you will see a corresponding warning message. The following technical optimizations have been incorporated into Firmware version 1.102: Automatic compensation of color shifts at the edge of images resulting from the use of LEICA UV/IR filters on Leica M lenses with focal lengths of between 16 and 35mm. Improvement of internal process steps
Guest guy_mancuso Posted April 12, 2007 Share #6 Posted April 12, 2007 WATE users Using the LEICA M8, firmware version 1.102 with the LEICA TRI-ELMAR-M 16-18-21mm f/4 ASPH. and a LEICA UV/IR filter About the lens The LEICA M8 has an increased sensitivity to infrared light. This manifests itself in a slightly purple rendering of dark or black surfaces (particularly black textiles). Using the LEICA UV/IR filter in front of the lens effectively prevents this from occurring. When using wide-angle lenses from 16 to 35mm with the LEICA UV/IR filter, a focal length specific correction of the color cast towards the edge of the image is required. With 6-bit coded lenses, this is done automatically in the camera as the lens type is transferred to the LEICA M8 as part of the coding. However, in the case of the LEICA TRI-ELMAR-M 16-18-21mm f/4 ASPH., the lens type transferred does not always correspond to the focal length actually set on the lens. Additional information is therefore required. When the LEICA M8 is being operated with the Firmware version 1.10 (or higher), the focal length specific correction is possible for this lens too. To do this, the Firmware version includes an extended menu: 1. Under the menu item „Lens detection“, select the sub-point “On + UV/IR” by pressing the SET button. A new monitor screen appears with the title „Lens detection Tri-Elmar + UV/IR”. Note: Provided “On + UV/IR” has previously been set, this monitor screen appears automatically as soon as the camera is turned on and/or the LEICA TRI-ELMAR 16-18-21mm f/4 ASPH is attached, regardless of whether or not the monitor was previously active. 2. In the box with a red border, the three focal lengths 16, 18, and 21mm can be selected using the direction buttons and/or the central adjusting dial and confirmed as normal with the SET button. Notes: • The setting in the menu must be made every time the focal length on the lens is changed. • When the lens is attached, the middle focal length of 18mm is always preselected. • This manual adjustment of the focal length in the menu is only necessary with the LEICA TRI-ELMAR-M 16-18-21mm f/4 ASPH. The LEICA TRI-ELMAR-M 28-35-50mm f/4 ASPH. features the necessary mechanical transfer of the set focal length to the camera to display the appropriate bright-line frame in the viewfinder. The camera electronics detect the setting and use it to perform focal length specific correction.

Guest guy_mancuso Posted April 12, 2007 Share #11 Posted April 12, 2007 BTW it is safe to go out and play, i have had it for a few weeks and all seems well but if you see something let's repeat what we did with 1.092 and keep a nice laundry list that we can send back to leica . I think that worked very well last time.
brucek Posted April 12, 2007 Share #12 Posted April 12, 2007 Guy: Thanks for the reassurance. I was going to wait and let the other "pioneers" gather up most of the arrows... :-) Bruce

Shootist Posted April 12, 2007 Share #14 Posted April 12, 2007 Just updated. On time greatly reduced, No more "0" then battery bar then shot remaining. Now turn on and battery bar + image remaining comes up quick. Lens detection "On + UV/IR". Anyone have a change log? Need to go out and do some shots. (NOT alcohol)
MP3 Posted April 12, 2007 Share #15 Posted April 12, 2007 I just thought today whether Leica will defer the 1.10 to June. The wait is over. It must be a great version !! Thanks, Guy for your wonderful laundry list on 1.092. You and many fellows here had helped Leica to shape up its baby. Real great. wparsonsgisnet Posted April 12, 2007 Share #16 Posted April 12, 2007 Here is a picture in my cubby, ballanced with the WhiBal card (fluorescent lighting, of course). 1. I note that the prefix for the files has not changed. My file still starts L109xxxx. 2. With my particular camera, I still need to touch the shutter button for the camera to come on. Turning the switch has not been enough since 1.091 or 1.092. This is a picture of a print from an epson 2200, from an image taken with a D2. 35mm 'lux asph, f4, 1/60, 486 filter, Edmund's tuned2 profile and Wb with WhiBal card. I do not have codes, so must try the sharpie method to see how the accommodation of the 35mm cyan shift is. I don't particularly notice the cyan at the corners. I guess there isn't much IR under the fluorescent lighting, but I don't notice vignetting, either. Here's the auto WB jpg -- color stinks, but under it is fluorescent. No vignetting in the jpg, either. Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! I won't name names but there doing a great job and a great asset to leica and there end users. Let's not forget this part, some great minds at work here

Turning the switch has not been enough since 1.091 or 1.092. Same here..... it would be REALLY NICE to know from Leica is this is a hardware difference between cameras, or something that is in the camera setup causing it. PLEASE ?
