jip Posted September 9, 2013 Share #1 Â Posted September 9, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello, Â when I halfway depress the shutter (the step before it actually is released) it is supposed to lock the exposure, but it doesn't, I'm in Aperture priority mode, but in the P mode it doesn't work either... Â Any ideas?! Â Does it have to do with the DMR? Â Thanks!!
jip Posted September 9, 2013 Author Share #2 Â Posted September 9, 2013 I have now found out that it is only working in spot metering mode, I guess this is normal, since thats when you would use aim, meter, lock, recompose, shoot to shoot your pictures. Â Although more modern camera's like Canikons do it over the whole metering range am I correct?
andybarton Posted September 10, 2013 Share #3 Â Posted September 10, 2013 I had an R8 with the DMR. It too developed a fault with the metering system - it's the R8 that does the metering, not the DMR, so it would have been a problem using film too. Â It's a fairly common fault with the R8 and is uneconomic to repair - this is the reason why I sold my DMR. Â It's a pity because, apart from this major problem, the R8 was a great camera. jaapv Posted September 10, 2013 Share #4 Â Posted September 10, 2013 Fortunately replacement R8s are a lot more economic than the repair.

sc_rufctr Posted September 10, 2013 Share #6 Â Posted September 10, 2013 Fortunately replacement R8s are a lot more economic than the repair. Â Yea but how long before decent R8/9 bodies start drying up? Â There's an opportunity for someone here. If you could repair the spot metering issue inexpensively it would certainly be in demand. Â I have a theory... Don't take this as gospel but I believe the spot metering fails because the light sensor on the flip up door looses contact with the micro processor because the ribbon cable becomes faulty. (the one that becomes active on spot metering alone) It becomes faulty at the hinge point because of repeated flexing at this point. Â The reason I believe this is because of the way the camera behaves after the fault occurs. That is gross over exposure on centre weight or average metering and full 16 second exposure on the spot metering setting. And these exposure conditions continue without any variance. What that means is that the centre sensor has lost all connection with the CPU rather than have developed an internal fault. Â Am I wrong anyone??? Does anybody know better??? Please chime in if you can bring any in site to this issue.

On the R9 it works on spot metering and centre weighted metering. So jip's camera is probably functioning normally.

Exactly, I was reading the R9 manual because I couldn't find the R8 manual, and the one with my camera is French, since I thought the differences where so small... then when I was out shooting I noticed the lock didn't work, I didn't try switching back to spot metering... so I thought it was just faulty or something, didn't hold me from taking good shots since I got some anyway, don't need exposure lock for that...  When I got home I posted it here, but meanwhile found a R8 manual online, and read it only works in spot metering, and so it does. So the camera is okay, and not faulty. jaapv Posted September 10, 2013 Share #9  Posted September 10, 2013 Yea but how long before decent R8/9 bodies start drying up? . Quite a while. There were still factory-new R8 bodies available a couple of years ago.
