Stacking 1.25x ?

This may be a really stupid question - but I searched and did not find the answer.

 

For focusing with longer focal length lenses, it is possible / practical to 'stack' 2 (or more!) 1.25x magnifiers?

I'm not sure they are threaded.

Just tried it, they are threaded because it's assumed you might want to put a dioptre lens in there.

 

I tried the Leica and HK Supplies magnifiers and I think they work quite well for a 90 and (maybe) a 75mm lens. The rangefinder patch is huge and focussing easy.

I stack the Leica magnifier with the Megapearls one when using the 135 Elmarit with goggles. That gives me an adjustable diopter as well. Only thing is you have to keep all the glass scrupulously clean else the viewfinder contrast is low.

where can you get M8 diopter fixes?

My Megaperls adapter arrived this morning. Wow that was v.quick!

 

The diopter is a little dissapointing because there are no indents etc, so it can easily move.... however, I will see how it goes.

 

As far as stacking it concerned, you certainly lose some light, clarity and contrast with them stacked. For sure the focus patch is bigger, but you are focusing with more on 'shapes' rather than 'details'. I need to give this some time before I decided if it's worth it or not....

where can you get M8 diopter fixes?

You should be able to get get fixed diopter correction lenses for the M series from any leica dealer.

 

Leica literature says:

"These lenses are available in grades of plus/minus 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2 and 3 diopters. Prior to ordering, it should be noted that the Leica M's viewfinder is preset by default to -0.5 diopters. So anyone wearing glasses of 1 diopter strength would require a +1.5 diopters M system correction lens."

 

However if your eyes have very limited accomodation (which is my problem) then you may need a variable diopter correction - that's not available from Leica. The problem is because the camera uses a direct vision viewfinder the amount of correction needed depends to some extent upon the camera to subject distance. If this is the case the only solution I've found is the Megapearl's magnifier which has an adjustable diopter. You do need to do a search on this board for Megapearls comprehend the patent issues though.
