wildlightphoto Posted August 29, 2013 Share #21 Posted August 29, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) I hope you'll post again when you can answer my questions. Not having dissected an S2 I don't know how the screen protector is attached but having disassembled and repaired several models of 35mm cameras from several manufacturers I can assure you that vastly different design and construction techniques can be used in outwardly similar cameras resulting in vastly different repair costs for a number of repairs. You're attempting to compare a mid-grade mass-production camera with a premium model of different format. I agree that they can both be used to make photographs. That's where the similarity ends. You might as well compare the cost of repairing your beloved 5D with the cost of repairing a Holga.

Gibbo Posted August 29, 2013 Share #22 Posted August 29, 2013 Not sure I'd want to take a chisel to any camera

My read is that you don't know if Leica installs its cover glass in any special way or if the OP had his LCD replaced along with the cover glass. Perhaps there is the implied assumption that because it costs so much more it must be better. I never loved any camera. They come and go.

If you want 5D repair costs, get a 5D and suffer the consequences. My impression of people who buy into the S system is that they want better performance (and QC) than the 5D offers, and are willing to suffer the financial consequences. hamey Posted August 31, 2013 Share #25 Posted August 31, 2013 If I was going to the Antarctica, I certainly would NOT take the Canon 5Dmk-3. But a definite Canon 1DX as I consider it the best and most rugged DSLR out there. Simply an awesome machine. Ken.
glenerrolrd Posted August 31, 2013 Author Share #26 Posted August 31, 2013 Unfortunately Leica choose to put a inexpensive plastic screen cover on the rear LCD for the S2 . To get the sapphire screen cost $5K more for the s2P (which had other benefits ) . This ,of course , has now been corrected with the new S(006) which uses Gorilla glass . I chalk this up to just bad luck ....why would you expect a screen protector that had been used on dozens of your cameras to react to the S2 screen ? But I am not happy that Leica will not allow me to replace my screen with the sapphire version.
Paul Reading Posted September 6, 2013 Share #27 Posted September 6, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) I don't believe that the manufacturer of the screen protector has done anything wrong here. They could not reasonably have known that the Leica screen was made of something that would react with their adhesive. With regard to the replacement screen, what reason did Leica give for refusing to allow you to have a sapphire replacement? Is it that he electronics and internal connector is different? jlehrer Posted September 6, 2013 Share #28 Posted September 6, 2013 Paul, I have asked Germany a number of times if it is possible to replace the standard glass on an S2 with the sapphire glass from the S2-P, and every time the answer has always been a firm "no." I don't know the exact reason, but if I had to take an educated guess I would say it is because they do not stock an abundance of this particular component, and wish to reserve their limited supply should the screen on an S2-P be replaced. The new S (Typ 006) does not use sapphire glass, so they would not have a reason to keep significant inventory of the 3 inch sapphire glass cover. The S2 and the S2-P are identical other than the screen, so I can't imagine it being a mechanical or an electronic issue either, however without dissembling one it's impossible to know for sure! If anyone wants to donate an S2-P for us to take apart I am happy to post my findings here!

albireo_double Posted September 11, 2013 Share #30 Posted September 11, 2013 Hmm, the screen cover on my S2 is scratched after two years of use but do I care enough to start investigating various "protectors"? Not really... The scratching is only really visible when the LCD is off and I have no problem reviewing images or changing settings with the LCD scratched. By the way, I was told my dealer to use the clear plastic film that an Iphone or Ipad comes with when new, just cut it to size and stick it on the display. But I never did and don't really regret. The cameras are to be used and if they get scratched then so be it.

ACMAXX 3 0" Hard LCD Screen Armor Protector for Leica x Vario APS C Camera 18430 | eBay Thanks This is what I use on my M9. The adhesive part is only a thin strip around the frame, and the actual protector never touches the LCD screen. Even if any chemical reaction occurs, it would be to a very limited area on the outer parts of the screen.
