leica m8 oddity - "writes but nothing is there"

Hello everyone

First thread and it is a problem. :) If it was a continuously occuring one it would be very annoying but possibly easier to solve.

The situation is the following: Leica M8 1 or 2 GB SD Card, camera set to single shot. Dependent upon the situation I fire off two or three shots one after the other (trying to get the dog in a flattering pose - actually just trying to get him to look like a dog instead of an old mop). The write light blinks , blinks, blinks and finally stops. I push play to see the pictures and get the last picture I took before the short burst. Although it supposedly wrote to the card none of the pictures are there.

The worst thing is that this is not reproducible. Same lens, same situation, same burst of shots - everything works perfect. Then it decdies not too. I am still at firmware 1.090. Havent updated to 1.092. Might that be the root of the problem? Its not the SD card - have tried three different 1 GB cards from three manufacturers, and 2 different 2 GB cards. When it happens it happens reagrdless of SD card, aperture prioroity or fully manual and regardless of what lens I am using (although I would find it hard to think the lens was responsible).

Has anyone else experienced the same type of problem? Was there a fix?

Any ideas or suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks for the quick reply. Will download it and load it tonight. Then see what happens in the next few days.

Thought I should upload a photo of the dog that works. As I said it is hard not to have him look like a mop - everything is one colour - mud - and his "internal contrast" is very low. :o When you photograph him against earth, as here, it sometimes like having him in camoflague. I am personally amazed by the quality of the picture - this is a 10% cut out of the original 35 mm shot - and evyrything, including his "zottelige" fur is sharp.

2nd reply to my own thread. First thanks again Jaap. I dont know if the firmware update fixed the problem I was having as it wasnt occuring regularly - but what it did fix is the color balance of photos with the 28-35-50 Tri-elmarit ASPH. Before the update I was having to adjust the white balance of almost all the photos as they were either yellow tinged (50 mm and 35 mm) or blue tinged (28mm). Now they seem to be, at least in sunlight, dab on.

Sorry to ask, but are the burst pictures there when you download the SD card to a computer, or when you explore it with an image browser or a file explorer? Or is it a in-camera only issue?

Hi.

No the bursts are gone - cant download them, cant find them when I take the SD cards out and search for them - they just dont exist. It is a really weird phenomena that is annoying. If it was happening on contract work I would be very p... off. I hope the 1.092 update has solved the problem but as it wasnt coming up all that often anyway I might have to wait a week or two before I can say - its gone or its still here.

In case anyone is interested or has had the same problem. The update to 1.1 seems to have fixed the burst problem. I now get all the phtots I have taken. Not all of them are worth having .) but they are at least there.

It might well be the firmware. 1.090 was a mistake and swiftly retracted by Leica as "unfinished" The first thing to do is to upgrade to 1.092 imo.

AH 1.090 was NOT a mistake, it was the fixed version put on all cameras coming out of Solms after the M8 was fixed. 1.091 was the mistakenly released firmware.

I'd put 1.102 on it and not even fool with 1.092.
