philipus Posted August 17, 2013 Share #1 Posted August 17, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Riding my bicycle the other day I got the front wheel stuck in the bloody tram tracks and managed a rather impressive if quite violent crash, which bruised up all protruding points on my right-hand side. That's not so important, but my beloved M4 with the 35 FLE was in my sling bag on my back and, it seems, took quite a beating in the crash because the rangefinder doesn't focus at infinity any longer. I've tried different lenses with the same result. I'm happy I didn't have the camera on my shoulder or around my neck because then it and the lens would have been well and truly smashed. Thankfully the Summilux appears ok. I was going to send in the lens for adjustment on warranty of the aperture together with my TTL to have the MP finder upgrade applied, but now it seems I must send in both my Ms. I hope they'll return in time for the One Challenge which I had hoped to participate in this year How long does Leica take these days for these types of repairs/services? Advertisement Posted August 17, 2013 Posted August 17, 2013 Hi philipus, Take a look here Crashed - rangefinder doesn't focus at infinity. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
payasam Posted August 17, 2013 Share #2 Posted August 17, 2013 This is the commonest R/F adjustment. You need to rotate the cam follower wheel that is visible at the top of the lens mount.
Bateleur Posted August 17, 2013 Share #3 Posted August 17, 2013 Pity about that, and about the M4 too. My MP spent six weeks in Soloms for a similar adjustment some years ago, but a lot depends on their work load though. Good luck with the recovery Charles
philipus Posted August 18, 2013 Author Share #4 Posted August 18, 2013 Mukul, Charles, thank you very much. I'm not sure I dare adjust the wheel myself though and I also want it checked thoroughly because I'm not sure it didn't also get damaged inside. I'll send it in and hope it returns quickly. otto.f Posted August 18, 2013 Share #5 Posted August 18, 2013 I would send my FLE with it then, which must have had impact too
philipus Posted August 18, 2013 Author Share #6 Posted August 18, 2013 Thanks Otto. Yes, i forgot to say that. I had planned on sending in the lens anyway to adjust this issue so it will be good to get all done at the same time. The aperture and focusing rings on the lens appear unaffected by the crash but one never knows, of course. Cheers Philip
otto.f Posted August 18, 2013 Share #7 Posted August 18, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Well IMO *this issue* is completely normal since the day Leica started to make lensens, but still. The inability to focus at infinity *can* be caused by the lens too.
philipus Posted August 18, 2013 Author Share #8 Posted August 18, 2013 Well IMO *this issue* is completely normal since the day Leica started to make lensens, but still. The inability to focus at infinity *can* be caused by the lens too. I've also read that it is not uncommon for aperture blades to be visible at max aperture but it's not how I'd prefer my lens actually. I have other lenses that do not display this, it's only the 35 FLE. I did try it on my other M and it focuses properly at infinity. But other lenses on the damaged M4 also fail to achieve focus at the widest end. All the paper work is now done so tomorrow morning it's off to Solms with it. otto.f Posted August 18, 2013 Share #9 Posted August 18, 2013 Luigi case!
TomB_tx Posted August 18, 2013 Share #10 Posted August 18, 2013 Glad you are OK - must have been quite a jolt to throw out an M4. I've had mine since new in 1968, and it never went out. I recently got a used Z Ikon ZM with RF off badly at infinity and equally over the range, so I'm afraid it will prove to be more fragile. However the adjustment is quite easy by removing the shutter speed dial, and so far has been good since I adjusted it. Don't plan to take it cycling however!
