Rewind Knob on 3C stuck

I have a mint 3C sharkskin that probably never even had a roll of film through it, and seems to have a perfect shutter and cosmetics. However, I cannot pull up the rewind knob! It turns easily, but seems stuck in the "down" position. I did check the rewind release lever, but that seems not to be the problem.

The family that sold it to me said that it was presented to their father as a retirement present in 1949, but he knew nothing about cameras, and just put it away in a drawer.

I thought of using a drop of oil, but afraid of having it drip into some other area that could be harmful. Any suggestions?

Alan

If it's truly mint/unused maybe it's best not to use it! Is it also boxed? Would be interesting to see a photo.

Anyway, the rewind knob should lift up very easily. I suspect it's just stuck through non-use (dried lubricant perhaps). That would also mean that other lubricants have suffered so I wouldn't attempt to cock or fire the shutter either, without first having a CLA.

Dear James, thanks for the tips.

I just discovered that the Summitar 50mm (coated) has mold inside, although the front & rear elements show no cleaning marks or other abuse, therefore I conclude that all the problems with the body and lens are strictly the result of storage in a humid environment (Pennsylvania) for over 45 years. Cosmetically, the 3C looks perfect, showing flawless chrome with no rust or marks, and the sharkskin covering is perfect! The shutter still sounds fine at all speeds. I am in Boise, Idaho where the humidity is usually about 15-25% I have heard that the post-war 3Cs have a reputation for peeling sharkskin and thin/rusting chrome, so my 3C is an exception.

Because of this, I will not fool around with it, but will send it to DAG for repairs (Don Goldberg in Wisconsin). By the way, it did not come with a box, or anything else. Sold to me by the survivors of the original owner, who received it as a retirement gift in 1949.
