james.liam Posted December 25, 2014 Author Share #21  Posted December 25, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) I bought a goggled 35 Summicron with my M3, in '68 it was by far the best 35mm lens available for any 35mm camera and any others as fast as f/2 were very few and far between.I bought an asph 35 Summicron for my M6ttl about 10 years ago. Both on film and on my Nex 6 its much sharper than the v1 8 element at the larger apertures, such is progress!  Gerry  Makes sense.  Any thoughts on the rendering of v.1 vs ASPH on the Monochrome? Advertisement Posted December 25, 2014 Posted December 25, 2014 Hi james.liam, Take a look here 35 Summicron 8-element vs ASPH. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
gyoung Posted December 25, 2014 Share #22 Â Posted December 25, 2014 I haven't taken a b&w photo for myself for a very long time, indeed the M6 has never had a roll of b&w film in it. I have always preferred colour for my own stuff, and gave up b&w with the M3 as soon as cibachrome allowed me to make decent prints from Kodachrome! Lots of experience professionally, mainly with larger formats, but that was commercial requirements from customers! Gerry
jbb Posted December 29, 2014 Share #23  Posted December 29, 2014 Hi, I am a very happy user of the v1 since my M6 in 1985 (when the 35 ash was too expensive for me !) and then I rediscover it with the Monochrom. This is a very sharp lens even though a little bit soft wide open. If you shoot wide open with digital Ms don't forget that you probably need a ND filter and in that case you may encounter flare (mostly due to the lens but also to the filter reflection into the lens) which means you need the 12504 hood ! nevertheless this lens is very good (maybe more...) and except for pixel peeping maniac you will get that Leica rendering as any other 35 Cron  happy new year in advance  JB
Theodor Heinrichsohn Posted January 20, 2015 Share #24  Posted January 20, 2015 There was an interesting comparison shown recently and the colouring of the 8 element was very appealing, it's on my want list. I'd look at the 35 MkIV as the resolution is remarkable and can surprise if stopped down a little it also has incredible depth (that Leica 3D) at f2.8,4 particularly f4. I bet this would be stellar on the MM  The 35/2 Summicron version 1 was my second 35mm lens for film M cameras in the 60ties. The second was the 35/2.8 Summaron. At f 5.6 the 2.8 is even better than the f2. The f2 asph. is much superior at f2 and more contrasty overall. I use the latter with the M8/M9 and M. The 3/2 V1 is my favorite for certain color rendering f.i. late afternoon or early morning light and it is much better than any other 35 I have both on film and digital when I need pastel type rendering. Example: Yangste Gorges with the successive mountain ranges slowly disappearing into the haze. My conclusion: 35/2 version 1 irreplaceable for special situations. 35/2 asph used for all other pictorial situations except portraits, which can be too clinical. These opinions are based on my actual lenses and may not be representative. Teddy

Theodor Heinrichsohn Posted January 24, 2015 Share #27 Â Posted January 24, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) Teddy, do you need to use the goggles on that 35/2.8? Lovely renditions. Â No, I used a separate 35mm finder or else the built in 35mm setting of the camera. I do not own a 35 lens with goggles. Teddy
