Leica M4-P with M3 Rangefinder...

I have an M4-P with what appears to be a rangefinder from the M3. In other words it has framelines for a 50mm lens (which are wide and are set at the edge of the viewfinder) and framelines for the 90mm and 135mm lenses (which are narrow). The rangefinder area has the depth of field extensions at top and bottom which I believe are also from the M3.

I'm very happy with the camera although it's not used very much as I have an M8 but would be interested to know whether these conversions were common or any other information that you may have.

Hello Jon,

Welcome to the Frorum.

If you like using a 50mm, 90mm or 135mm lens consider yourself a very lucky person.

The larger .91X image of the M3 range/viewfinder coupled with its better range/viewfinder optics make the M3 range/viewfinder the easiest M range/viewfinder to use.

The M3 range/viewfinder is the most accurately focussing range/viewfinder ever put in an M. Its higher cost was the reason Leitz replaced it with the .72X image M4 & M5 versions.

If you use mostly 50mm, 90mm & 135mm lenses or don't mind 35mm lenses & wider with gogggles or auxilliary viewfinders you should be very pleased. Auxiliary viewfinder for 75mm also.

Leitz/Leica have been exchanging or adding range/viewfinders as well as rangefinders & viewfinders since they began building them into 35mm cameras around 80 years ago.

Best Regards,

Michael

Hi Michael and Jon,

As Michael said, I even advise the 50 Lux Asph if you can, for both of your 2 cameras

very luminous lens. I have all these lens from 28 to 135 (not 75) for my M7 and M8-M9.

Michael and you , if you have (film) pictures, please post them here:

(images not impeccably smooth

I use less now my 2 digital M , images always "impeccably smooth", "flat" and "soulless"

(see my comments in the thread above)

Regards

Henry

I had to return our M4 to have the shutter mechanism repaired. I asked the factory to replace the M4 frame lines with ones from the M2 (35-50-90). They did it. Very satisfied. Whether Solms / Wetzlar will still change out the frame lines, I don't know. Won't hurt to ask.
