skinnfell Posted August 5, 2013 Share #1 Posted August 5, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) I am playing with the idea of getting a flash for my Monochrom. To test out if I like to use flash or not, I have an old Canon 430EX . I know it won't work in TTL mode, but I wonder, is there any chance of harm to the camera if I use a canon flash in M mode on my Leica?

StephenPatterson Posted August 5, 2013 Share #2 Posted August 5, 2013 Nope. I have used my Canon 430EX II flash in manual mode on my Leicas.
jaapv Posted August 5, 2013 Share #3 Posted August 5, 2013 Max trigger voltage is 600V. You will be hard pressed to find a flash that exceeds this value. http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m9-forum/130720-leica-m8-m8-2-m9-m9p.html#post1536447
Photoskeptic Posted August 5, 2013 Share #4 Posted August 5, 2013 I used a Nikon flash on my M8 to shoot a wedding once. Worked like a charm.
marknorton Posted August 5, 2013 Share #5 Posted August 5, 2013 It's only the oldest flashes which were entirely manual which presented a high voltage to the flash contacts. If you're in any way concerned, get a voltmeter (you can buy from next to nothing at the likes of Home Depot, B&Q, Maplin or whoever) and measure the voltage between the centre contact and the side ground contact. Chances are it's less than 12v.
msap7222 Posted August 7, 2013 Share #6 Posted August 7, 2013 I have used SF20 Leica Flash using curly grey 1 meter Nikon SC-17? TTL cord - works perfectly (same contacts as Leica flash) Possibly Nikon TTL may also work in TTL? Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD

CaptZoom Posted August 7, 2013 Share #8 Posted August 7, 2013 I've used the Canon 430 on the M9 in manual mode without problems, though it takes some finagling to get it to fit right.
wildlightphoto Posted August 7, 2013 Share #9 Posted August 7, 2013 I have used SF20 Leica Flash using curly grey 1 meter Nikon SC-17? TTL cord - works perfectly (same contacts as Leica flash) Possibly Nikon TTL may also work in TTL? That is not à possibility. The contact locations are the same so the cord will work with the SF20 but the signals are not the same so a Nikon TTL flash wil not work in TTL mode. jonogilmour Posted August 8, 2013 Share #10 Posted August 8, 2013 Used my 580EX II (much more powerful than the 430) yesterday on my M-E and it worked like a charm. Even woke the flash up when I half pressed the shutter.
