Leica X2 purchased with a flaw - only repair offered

Hi there. I'm new to this forum as I have only recently become an owner of the wonderful X2 camera. However the camera I received had a tiny flaw on it - a tiny dent/scratch on the silver part near the shutter button. It's not very noticeable but I noticed it. Plus I'm worried about how it came to be and whether it means that there is some internal damage also.

The shop I got it from is based in Australia and I live in South Korea at the moment. The shop in Australia was very understanding and offered me an immediate exchange through the Leica store in Seoul. However, the shop in Seoul refused the exchange and offered only to fix it. To be frank, their attitude made me feel like they thought the damage was done post purchase and I was just after a new unit.

I would have assumed that given Leicas international reputation, an exchange would not be a problem especially considering that when you buy a $2000 piece of equipment, you expect it to be perfect.

What would you guys do? I feel like I deserve a new camera, not a repair of something that was damaged before it came to me.

The alternative is that I mail it back to Australia but dealing with customs issues it would take longer than I'm willing to wait (months).

I would appreciate your opinions.

How disappointing. I feel for you. Your dealer is responsible for supplying a satisfactory product. X2 cameras are freely available, so appeal for a swift exchange by any means acceptable to you.

Did you pay the full retail price or was it maybe a demo model?

I wouldn't be too much worried if such a cosmetic thing is fixed by replying the top cover.

There might be more scratches coming when using it, this will be difficult to avoid.

So I would say, forget about it and go out shooting and enjoy your new toy instead of having headaches about it.

Good luck!

John

Thanks everyone for taking the time to respond.

The camera wasn't a demo model, it was purchased full price. The Australian store was really helpful in trying to communicate with the Korean store but they are standing by their position and offering a repair only.

My inclination was to just not worry about it from the start because the dent is minor. The thing that concerned me was whether it implies inside damage as well - for example, if something banged the top hard enough to create a dent, could it have affected something inside as well?

In any case, I might push once more and see where it gets me. It's more annoying than anything else it's not "perfect" but that's just the perfectionist in me talking :)

Thanks again for your help, appreciate it. Look forward to exploring the rest of the forum.

Your disappointment is understandable. If the 'ding' is tiny and camera is working the likelihood of internal functional damage is negligible. If the shop in Seoul has offered to fix it you could ask exactly how they plan to remedy the ding and how long the repair might take. If they offer to replace the top plate your camera should be fine.

If it was bought new there should be no dent or scratch whatsoever, whether it's small or not. Take the offer of a repair from Seoul but check first if this means them fitting a brand new top plate replacement & whether they have the necessary parts in stock. Otherwise you should ship it straight back to Australia without delay so they can ship a new replacement back to you.

Thanks again everyone, your responses are really appreciated. The store in Seoul offered to replace the whole top cover. I will see them tomorrow and figure out how long it will take, and just suck it up and stop being annoyed about the situation.

Sh*t happens I guess!
