Will I need my D2 Lens hood in Paris in December 2006 ?

If you go to Buckingham Palace, don't forget to go across the street to St. James (pronounced "Sin James") park which is quite nice and has many unusual water fowl, such as the gorgeous mandarin duck.

Unlike Oz, the UK like all of Europe still permits smoking in dining areas. Even when you can find a nonsmoking area in a restaurant, it ajoins the smoking section. My strategy is usually to dine early.

Just a tip so that you don't sound too much like a tourist! :) I have never heard St James Park called Sin James. I reckon someone was pulling your leg ;) (Snt James, yes, in the same way as we would say "Snt Paul's", but not Sin James)

Smoking is becoming more and more frowned upon in enclosed spaces, especially restaurants. In a couple of years time, it will be banned over here (as it is in Ireland and Scotland already). So, if you still smoke, don't assume that you will be able to light up in any restaurant.

One other small factual error, Marx did his research at the British Livrary, not the British Museum.

The Round Reading Room were Marx famously did his research is physically located within the British Museum complex. In any case, the British Library was part of the British Museum until at least the 1970's when the two institutions were made into separate entities.

Once again Thankyou to all those respondees with the hints and tips for Paris and London.

I have copied all this information into my PDA.

This Leica community is showing excellent sharing of knowledge. It's a pleasure to be part of this forum.

PS...as a non-smoker.... that was a gr8 tip about dining early.

I used a lens hood for over one year with my D2. Then because of its awkwardness in storing, I stopped using it. I saw no difference. I always use hoods on my other M and R lenses, but I would have to say that I don't think there's much if any difference with the D2 hood on or off. BTW, I'm going to Spain for two weeks and I'm not bringing the hood. We'll see.

Dugby, I endorse all of the lens hood comments above. (I am just left salivating over the cuisine recommendations!)

I suspect that what is bothering you is the constraint of an erc which may not take the D2 with hood mounted. If that is so, I would swap the case for a small insconspicuous bag into which you can pop your D2 whenever prudent to do so. At least for the trip to Paris.

Thankyou David.

I actually did state that I have two ERC's -

1) one is a Minolta 7000/9000 Leather ERC that does not allow fitting of the hood

2) second is the OEM Lumix LC1 ERC, that does allow fitting of Hood on D2. I use this ERC 99% of the time

I've now solved my issue of carrying my D2 (plus monopod and bit's n pieces) stealthily when travelling the Metro and Underground.

I found a nice "old crummy looking" saddle bag on ebay...... a bit like Jack Bauer's on "24" minus the un-mentionables that you don't write about on the internet.
