If it's not broken...stupid me

I decided to remove the GGS LCD screen protector on my X1 because I felt the reflectivity in bright sunlight was possibly excessive. Things went wrong after that point.

Instead of using a piece of dental floss to separate the GGS cover from the LCD screen cover mounted on top of the LCD itself, I decided to lift the GGS cover using my fingernail. In doing so, the GGS cover started to separate BUT the LCD cover, itself, pulled away from the LCD and the camera body. WTF?

I then pushed the LCD cover back into the body and finished removing the GGS cover. Afterwards I noticed some (not too much) dust particles had entered under the LCD cover and on the LCD itself (between the inside of LCD cover and the LCD). The camera works fine sans the newly acquired dust.

Later I did some research and it appears (although I have not confirmed by speaking with Leica) that the LCD and the LCD cover are hermetically sealed together as a unit and once separated, dust will continue to intrude between the LCD cover and the LCD.

Stupid me!

So, tomorrow I will contact Leica USA and they will probably tell me to send the X1 to them to seal/replace the items to prevent further intrusion.

I should have left the camera alone or done some research on removing the GGS screen (dental floss technique) prior to messing with it. Instead, I probably created a repair opportunity needlessly.

I contacted Leica USA and spoke with Dave Elwell. He indicated that the LCD and the LCD cover/protector are separate pieces joined together during camera assembly and that once the LCD screen cover is separated from the body, the "dust" integrity cannot be assured until/unless the item(s) are reassembled correctly.

As far as repair is concerned, the estimate is not confirmed but it would be approximately $150, pending disassembly and inspection. Dave's advice was to send it in because once dust has entered the body and the integrity has been compromised, dust may continue to enter and at some point contaminate the sensor-lens system which is a major repair; possibly replacement.

So, the moral is "don't fix it if it's not broken" and/or "be prepared for the consequences". :(

I am sorry to read your news. You are brave to recount it and I am sure our community will be grateful to you.

As an aside, long ago when I considered covering my LCD (on M8 and X1) I became concerned about the glass covers and opted for a highly recommended film. It is cheaper, not an initial consideration, and easier to remove. However, I have never needed to replace them so far. One has a minor blemish which I accept. I do have a spare for each camera. I forget the name, but they came from Germany, I think.

I have always used GCS glass covers on my DSLR's as they are very, very good. When the time comes to replace the camera for a later model, I sell it with the GCS cover intact.

However, I do not use them with the newer swivelling or "touch screen" LCD's as it does increase the depth of the screen and interferes with the touch screen facility, so then I opt for the disposable film screen instead. They are not as clear as the glass covers though and with heavy use they soon need replacing.

I would be very interested in the name of the company that makes the film you are using, if you can locate the name.

I just found the spare in its box. It is called 'Invisible Shield' by ZAGG. I learned about from this forum (worth searching) where it was highly recommended. There is very little degradation of light transmission, unlike some cheaper competitors. It is used on all manner of electronic display devices including laptop screens.

I have this film on my M9 and M8 since I bought them

Very cheap (few Euros) and you can do yourself !

it is flexible and does not damage the edge of the screen or the screen surface itself, and leaves no traces

A product of Germany

and you can mount yourself (and remove if you want)

The result : much more natural picture
