squiff Posted April 8, 2007 Share #2 Posted April 8, 2007 nice colours for a night shot, my concern with the image is the rubbish in the bottom left corner and the bright reflection off the phone box, takes away the emotion of the image, making it less appealing to look at. Unfortunalely the red light is now missing as well as part of the tree. Apart from that this pics gives a good feeling of the moment and sensations. Very nice "night" colors too. When looking at my cropping I realized that something important was missing. The Bus stop and the rabbish. These two elements are very important in your pics. They add something to this atmosphere of late night or early morning. I was too quick when commenting. I have to apologize for this mistake. I don't see the interest in the picture apart from it being an example of the M8 dealing with available light. It could be any street, anywhere. What makes it specific to Hell's Kitchen? Big – In the early 19th century, the section of Manhattan in the west 40s now known as Hell’s Kitchen was frequented by seamen in port who got off their ships at the west side piers, and had many businesses there to offer services to these people. One was a large low-end restaurant owned by a German immigrant with the surname of “Heil”, and he named his place “Heil’s Kitchen”. You already figured out the rest. I did post this with the general intent of just showing the available light capabilities with my M8, though. I'll try to make my titles more reflective of the photo quality. biglouis Posted April 8, 2007 Share #9 Posted April 8, 2007 Ron Maybe I wrote my comments before my morning coffee. Coming back and looking at this again, I can see the attraction in the colours. They are almost impressionistic, like a late night Parisian street scene. I think this comes through better in the smaller crop. In fact, I think the key to improving the picture further is playing with different crops and possibly channel levels in Lightroom or CS2.
