Protection for LCD screen

I have gone from the ScreenPatronous to the Invisible Shield (they now have the M8 as a standard order). They work well but putting them on is not as easy. You have to wet them with a spray solution and DON'T get your fingers on the sticky side even after spraying your fingers with the spray as it will leave smudges and you can't fix it once you have applied it. It does provide strong protection and it does seem to stay on very well.

Thanks Wilson. How much degradation of appearance is there? The Patronus seemed to have essentially none to my eye, but I never tried to do a careful before/after comparison. Have you seen other screen protectors to compare? I noticed that they have a High Tech and a ClearTec version. The former is rated for longer use but wonder if the ClearTec is "clearer." Do you have experience with this? Thanks again for the advice.

Stephen,

Mine is the High Tech. I have not tried the Clear Tech. See the attached photo to try an give you an idea of screen degradation. Hope you like the subject matter. One upside is that you no longer keep looking at your images but just get on with taking them and sort it all out later.

I have the Leica half case and it provides some protection but it adds bulk and weight which I don't like. I am thinking of developing a pattern to send Invisble Shield to create a protective film on those areas that would be exposed to scratches and damage and providing that as protection (like their iPod coverings). Then you get a tough, thin, light weight protection that is all but invisible and no need for a case that gets in the way evertime you need to change batteries or SD card. Anyone else be interested? Maybe I can get them to cut us a deal on more than one.

Thanks Wilson. Great subject! I do agree that it's better to take pictures and limit use of the LCD.

They don't show an M8 screen protector on the Clear Touch site, only the C-1. What size did you order?

I use the ScreenPatronus and i've complete forgotten it's there. It's just plain invisible, whether the lcd is on or of. You get three of them and they're just as easily removed as put on, but they don't come off by themselves.

Don't know the Patronus. I have been using on my Canon 1DS, and anything else that has a small plastic LCD screen some stick on protectors I bought originally for my TomTom (GPS) The one on my Canon has been on now for about 3months. Periodically I change it when it gets too scratched. They are called 'Crystal Writer' made in China for the PDA market. You just cut them to size. Cheap cheerful but work well.

It's definitely worth protecting your screen cover if you care about scratches and such. Replacing it is a major job.

I guess so but I haven't found my M8 screen to be particularly susceptible to scratches. I've had the M8 long enough now that it is showing quite noticeable 'brassing' (at least a thinning of the black finish) around the edges of the top plate but the LCD screen is still pristine looking (once you wipe the fingerprints off). Maybe not hanging the camera around your neck (which I don't) helps in this regard.
