Preliminary impression on using M (Typ 240) with LiveView

My M (Typ 240 is only a few days old. On a rainy day I have experimented with the LiveView function and the (Olympus) EVF2.

This is not a function that interests me as an everyday tool and I only have M lenses. For me I think it will be most useful for checking rangefinder calibration. Happily my M rangefinder seems to be in perfect agreement with my (calibrated) lenses

I have some flowers in our garden with intense pink and orange (this example) colours. These can really challenge the limits of the recordable colour gamut even using DNG. In my experience the M9 and now new camera can record something like AdobeRGB. I think that the LCD and EVF displays can only contain sRGB.

A very overcast day with light showers here.

Trying out the APO 75 Summicron ASPH wide open at near minimum focus distance I found that the focus peaking does not work for me at all for this specific unusual circumstance and the LCD and EVF both show blobs of yellow and orange in place of the actual colour. Makes sense given the reproducible colour space but interesting to see such a graphic example.

Importantly the camera's actual recording imported into Lightroom 5 does better (although you can see that the most saturated colour areas are still out of gamut) and the version exported for web is converted to sRGB naturally.

what is your jpg image settings? If you set a vivid look, the LCD will display this. Try changing to B&W or standard color.

Also for LV focusing, be sure to turn on the focus aid at 5X and set it to auto. This will help tremendously. Some prefer 10X, I think its too much and find 5X perfect.

Are you saying live view or focus peaking doesn't work well here. Two different things.

Macjonny you can't have Focus Peaking without LiveView of course and I was referring to Focus Peaking. This is just a specific case because the red higher contrast area do not stand out against a blob of continuous tone (out of gamut) orange/yellow.

However yes LiveView is functional and 5x helps. For myself the rangefinder window just works better for me here.

I will look at my settings for LCD, thanks. I never set anything for JPG since I never shoot them but shall experiment. Not used to using it for any colour assessment nor anything but gross focus error personally (and the menus of course).

I am really really happy with the improvements over the M9 thus far, just thought that I would contribute something from the new camera learning.

I've been using mine with the Visoflex, 65mm Elmar and 90mm Elmar with bellows (but without the prism finder).

Works very well, even better than using the optical prism. I just leave the mirror in lockup mode and shoot with the EVF. Like the focus peaking and zooming in very much. Being able to angle 90 degrees is great too.

Ok I understand so it sounds like it is the live view that cannot display the needed contrast with the colors even when focus peaking isn't used. Thanks

I've found the 10x magnified view perfectly adequate for focussing without focus peaking ..... particularly with macro subjects.....

Me too. And, I even use the EVF when shooting subjects in low light the same way you do except with 5x or no mag and just rely on trying to get the clearest focus in the EVF.

Jeoff, I'm glad you like your camera. I'm over the moon with mine... I guess everyone knows that.:)

I tried the suggested setting of film mode to Vivid and to BW. The colour gamut is just too large in this instance for the LCD and the EVF (or on any camera as far as I know). However the BW does assist a lot in showing the focus peaking red. The contrast levels of the intense orange or pinks in this garden in dull light are a very big ask in any case.

For this kind of shot I am using a tripod of course. This was intended to be a worst case experiment for fun. The Liveview at x5 does work well for me. Personally I find the RF to be precise and clear in this application and that is fine by me.

As further comment on using Liveview I found that the time lag was perfectly acceptable.

I am discovering new functionality like a slideshow in your EVF on playing too.

I am really looking forward to experimenting with my Viso equipment too now.
