Hi everybody!

Got my M today, black, and thought I should share with you all the unwrapping of it:D

The Box, beautiful as always:

Even the way the box opens is well engineered:

When you lift the lid (magnetic) and fold out the front you reveal two drawers, just like a jewelry box:

One of the drawers contains the charger, cables and battery, all individually packed in small bags, the other the manual and Adobe Lightroom license:

The upper box contains what's important:

Wrapped in plastic, here it is:

Thanks guys for the cheering:)! Yes, the candles should have been lit:)!

So far I'm not really sure with the camera, the handling, feeling and build quality are all extremely good but I'm not sure with the colors yet. They are very different from my previous M8, not better, not worse, just different. Plan is to shoot during the summer and then see if I like it or not. My first impression is that M8 was more "kodakchrome" and that M is more "velvia" so it's really a matter of taste. For sunny days outside the M8 has been excellent but for indoor shooting it has always had its limitations. So, we will see, trust me, you will be the first ones to know:)!

I have one photo here on my blog:

Baby Photo Blog - klarazilla.123minsida.se

Sorry for not linking directly, but it was not possible from iPhone.

The other photos on the blog are with M8. Same lens though, summicron 35 from 1976.

Cheers

Joakim

Congrats! Why are the candles not lit?

Not to mention there should have been a glass of champagne instead of a Coffee Mug. ;)

So, now I've had the camera for almost two weeks, since I was in Greece in vacation one of those weeks (and decided to bring my M8 instead) I've only shoot around 100 shots with the M. I've tested it with Super-Elmar 24, Elmarit 28 (pre asph), Summicron 35 (3rd gen) and Elmar 90.

My first impressions with the camera are somewhat mixed, but here is a summary:

Pros:

*The build quality is very, very good, the camera feels even more solid than my old M8.

*The functionality of the camera is very intuitive

*The shutter is extremely quiet and a vast improvement over M8

*The screen is up to date with today's standard

*The viewfinder is excellent and a big improvement compared to M8

*The ISO-performance is about 2,5stops better over M8 and ISO 1600-ISO2000 looks really good!

Cons:

*The Autoiso function is shit (yes I know they will fix it but still...)

*The jpegs from the camera needs improvement. Since I'm shooting mainly RAW it doesn't bother me, but not all people do and I would have expected more

*The BIG red dot makes to camera somewhat indiscrete

*The auto WB is quite bad

Then I'm not so sure with the colors yet, they are quite different from M8, not better or worse, just different. In terms of image quality I don't really see a huge difference, yes there is more resolution, but already from the M8 I could print in any size that I wanted. What is good is that I can crop more. Why I choose the new M instead of buying an used M9 was the option to use R-lenses (since I have quite a few), possibility of an EVF, more quiet shutter, macro and teleoption and better ISO performance.

I'm convinced that most "bugs" will be fixed with a few firmware updates and also the new M will be a fantastic camera. But an advise if you already own an M9. Wait!!

Well, to be honest, in terms of image quality I don't see a big difference. The M9 is very, very good. What you get in the new M is:

*More functionality

*better screen

*1,5 better stop ISO

But you get all that at the cost of:

*different colors (matter of taste)

*worse AWB

*shit autoISO

*no good color profile in Adobe Lightroom

*no case (available from 3rd part though)

*no accessories

I do believe that the M will be awesome but I would recommend people to wait for a new firmware that fixes the AWB and autoISO and if you want to use Rlenses, the new adapter to be available.

From M8 to M9 there was a big step in image quality but mostly because of the full frame sensor, the IQ of the two cameras where quite equal. The new M offers a lot more functionality and of course new possibilities with R-lenses. The only problem is that the camera software is not ready for the task yet. The R option requires the new R to M adapter but that's not available yet, the same with the case and the grip. The only thing we can buy now is a battery, not very impressive...
