George Furst Posted June 27, 2013 Share #1 Posted June 27, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Last night I was out taking pictures with my two month old M (typ 240) and my favorite lens, the R Summilux 80mm when suddenly one half of the picture blanked out. I thought that something was blocking my picture as I was using the EVF. I checked but there was nothing there. Then I pointed the camera in other directions and again half of the EVF view was white with the line of delination running vertically separating the picture I was focusing on and the blanked out white portion of the picture. So I went ahead and took a photo and behold there was half the picture OK, and the rest white saved on the memory disk. Lookingclosely I note that there are very thin vertical lines separating the two zones, picture/white area. Luckily I am a professor between terms and was able to make a quick run to the Leica dealer in Seoul (hour away by KTX). They checked it out and said "the senser must be replaced". They did give me a loaner M8.2 which is fine but I will miss using my R lens for the month it will take to return the camera. I have seen the discussion about artifacts appearing but not a major faliure of M senser like this. Has any one else had this happen?
Advertisement Posted June 27, 2013 Posted June 27, 2013 Hi George Furst, Take a look here Re: M 240 issue with sensor, suddenly half whited out. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jaapv Posted June 27, 2013 Share #2 Posted June 27, 2013 Actually this is not the sensor dying but the electronics on the motherboard. One readout channel has died. The assembly must be replaced. Unfortunate but something that can happen in electroninics I fear. I hope you get your camera back soon.
Shade Posted June 27, 2013 Share #3 Posted June 27, 2013 Is this just an individual issue or another batch/widespread issue? Thanks..
jaapv Posted June 27, 2013 Share #4 Posted June 27, 2013 Completely individual, it is just one little IC, resistor or whatever conking out prematurely.

George Furst Posted June 30, 2013 Author Share #6 Posted June 30, 2013 Hope it gets fixed soon danny! Just returned from our trip to GyeongJu, the ancient capital of the Shilla Kindom (57 BCE to 935 AD) with the M8.2. I missed the full frame view but did have the 18mm 3.8 and that saved the day. I still have no idea how to change the ISO value. Will not see the new M for a month but I am teaching an intensive July program which I head for one reason, to increase the bank account to purchase the APO 50. Amaizing what one does for a lens. Have waited three months for it and was offered a used 50/.95 in its place for $9K. Was tempted. Hopefully by the end of the course I will have the M 240 back. As for the APO, no one in Seoul knows when it will arrive!

tobey bilek Posted June 30, 2013 Share #8 Posted June 30, 2013 Electronics die or fail early or late. We used to do a burn in on new equipment to catch the early failures. If they got past that stage, they would run a very long time. Railroads are in a pickle if one unit dies in the middle of the desert or on a main line. There is no pulling over to the side. Evidently you got something just outside the early stage that is normally culled out or should be culled out. I always advocate a backup camera, battery, charger, and cards. It can be in a hotel safe, hidden in a car if not to fancy or actually, the more beat up the better. I use my winter car.
marknorton Posted July 3, 2013 Share #9 Posted July 3, 2013 Impossible to know whether it's the sensor or the supporting electronics, but whichever it is, it needs to go back to Solms.
