another way to look at Leica X Vario

With the X Vario having lens 28mm f/3.5 at wide end , I was thinking the following:

with a full frame M-E or M240 options are:

Leica 28mm f/2.8 Elemarit $2195 US or

Leica 28mm f/2.0 Summicron $4295 US

if I look at 1.5 crop factor and want to use 28mm focal length on mirrorless body such as Sony Nex or Fuju X18mm = 28mm

than you are left with these 2 choices:

Leica 18mm f/3.8 Super-Elmar $3195 US or

Zeiss 18mm f/4 Distagon T ZM $1428 US

if want 75mm focal length it is much easier to find 50mm m lens to use on Sony Nex or Fuji X

Leica 50mm f/2.8 Summarit $1650 US

Zeiss 50mm f/2 Planer T $ 859

biggest problem with most zoom lens is that aperture is slower as lens get longer expect for professional lens with constant f/2.8

even if I wanted affordable Leica lens to get 36mm from mirrorless body , the Leica 24mm f/3.8 Elmer is still slower than lens used in X Vario and is $2595 US

Yes, I know all the M lenses are better build quality and better optics than lens on a X Vario

Dan

This is reason I changed my mind about mirrorless bodies with m lenses.

Don't be surprised if the X Vario zoom lens produces as good resolution as some of the M primes ... Remember the Tri Elmar performs as well as M prime lenses within its aperture range. And the X Vario has a broader focal length range than the Tri Elmar. But of course, it's unlikely that the M hard core would acknowledge that other non-M lenses can ever surpass M prime lens' performances ;) ... especially the non-M Vario X lens made in ???? (they think!) :D

Nonsense. This lens is the most praised part of the camera, both in image quality and build. The funny knee-jerk reactions to the speed have been quite flattened by the results.

Actually I think it points the way to the AF lenses Leica will have to introduce when they add auxiliary AF to the M-series.

So you do not think it's a 'plasticky' camera now ...with its lens that has build quality :D

My thinking is that the Leica X Vario is not over priced when you consider that a Fuji X-E1 + Fuji M adaptor and or Sony Nex 6 + m adaptor with the lenses listed above would not perform as well as a Leica X Vario .

Leica has optimized lens to body and giving the well known lens quality that has made Leica the reference that other lenses compared too.

Are you leaning toward Leica's case, or maybe a Luigi (if I spelled that right)? I still don't have a case for mine.

A 'no case' for my X Vario ...

... it does the job i.e. keeps it scratch free. The leather strap has to go - much prefer a fabric strap.

... and once inside the cloth bag ... Is that an X Vario in my pocket ? ... or ... ? :)

I don't know about the Sony but for the Fuji couldn't you just buy one of these for 400 quid?

IMO the more pertinent comparison is in the "normal" focal length range. The X Vario at 50mm must have a maximum aperture of around F5 and that, for me, reduces its utility considerably. It is a stop slower than the lens on my 0-serie 'replica'. If, when you need more speed, it was possible to whip the lens off the X Vario and replace it with something a couple of stops or so faster all would be good. But you can't so you have to consider carrying an additional camera.

Don't worry; in my post I praised the build of the lens calling it M lens like, mentioned the body being metal and only mentioned my personal tactile experience as plasticky. Which mainly refers to the cover material and which I feel about the M9 as well. Dunk clearly read just one word of my post out of context.

Apologies ... I should have used one of these ;) ... instead of one of these :D

Dunk and others who already have the X Vario.....

do you agree with this?

The IQ is nicer from the Leica. Period. Fact. 100% truth. But the Fuji is much more versatile. The X Vario has issues with focus in low light, doesn’t do much well besides static shots in full daylight. I tested it as did many of the guys who were on Palouse with me for the road trip. All of us had the same conclusion. The Vario is made and built nice with superb IQ in daylight, but other than that it falls apart. My review is soon.

maybe this is true at the long end 70mm but can not be the case if I use 28mm most of the time?

thoughts on this?

I have not tried my X Vario in 'low light' yet but plan to do so within a few days when hope to do a walkabout inside Peterborough Cathedral ...Forum member 'euston' did not mention any low light focusing problems with his pics http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/other/288827-leica-x-vario-photos-2.html I cannot find Huff's full test or a reference to what AF settings he used.

I used auto focus throughout and had no problems whatever achieving focus. I don’t recall a single case of the camera missing focus or failing to focus. Of course, all my subjects were static. With moving subjects it might be a different story.

Here’s a shot at full zoom and lens wide open of a dark, unlit ceiling. At ISO 3200 the image is a bit noisy but it is, I believe, in perfect focus.
