IR filter / M 240

On new cameras, the IR filtration is built into the sensor cover starting with the M9. Other brands have done the same.

The 092 is an ir filter made to pass ir and some very little visible light. Hold it to your eye and you can see some dark red image. So now you have the 092 filtering out the visible and the sensor cover filtering the ir. What do you suppose happens. Zero to no image is the correct answer.

Use an M8 for IR photos because that camera does not filter ir. 092 works well, 093 is more selective and filters all visible light. 093 Pics are more dramatic ir at the expense of much longer exposures, but still can be handheld at higher ISO.

I will not say the 240 will not make an IR photo, but the exposure is likely to be very long and in tripod land. Think 1 minute. If you want to butcher the camera, have the sensor cover replaced by Life Pixel if they will even do a Leica. Then it is an IR only camera.

You perhaps want a UV filter or a clear filter for protection? UV/IR B+W 486 filter for the M8 to get correct colors is one I keep on the lens for the M9. Seems not the hurt and then it available for the M8. The PRO grade in that issue is a chrome ring, not black.

The 093 will not work very well, as it filters out red and near-IR. The 092 works well on the M9 albeit at higher ISO values and longer exposure values as the M8 and it should be fine on the M240 as well, as you can go to higher ISO to compensate for the more efficient IR filtering. The IR filter on the M8 was 0.5 mm, which resulted in a 60% IR reduction, on the M9 it was 0.8 mm and filtered about 80 %. I expect the M240 to have a similar response. There is no basic difference in filtering between older and newer cameras, all of them have a filter in front of the sensor.

In the link the user had problems with 093 and M9, which is understandable, as you cannot get the ISO high enough to get a reasonably noisefree shot.

I would start out with a 092 if I were you. That should enable handheld shots at an ISO range of 800-1600.

Have fun! IR photography is very interesting.

I have a very simple way of converting the violet image one gets. I just click on it with the Whitebalance eyedropper and after that I do the contrast adjustments.

I have used the M240 with both the 093 & 092 filters. Both filters have their applications - you get a more traditional IR result (light foliage/dark skies) with the 093, but sometimes the 092 is the better choice. You really need to experiment with both to get a feel for it. I would add that the 092 filter doesn't produce the traditional IR look, but can yield striking B&W images nonetheless.

Exposure times and focusing are vastly different for the two filters. With the 092, exposure times are approaching handheld range in bright sunlight (around 1/30 at F2.8, ISO 800). Focus using the 092 isn't dramatically different from the normal settings and can be easily evaluated using LV or EVF. I'm guessing that it will fall within the DOF at F5.6 with a 35mm lens.

However, things are much different with the 093 filter. Focus MUST be set appropriately using LV/EVF to get a sharp final image. Focus can be set using LV at F1.4 or F2, but the EVF works much better. You will almost certainly need the EVF to focus slow lenses (SEM 21, etc). Exposure times are 4-60 seconds, depending on aperture, available light, ISO, etc.

It also helps to make a camera profile to use with these filters. I made one set to B&W film mode with the green filter and the preview is almost a perfect match for the final processed images. Another advantage is that you can see the red focus peaking much easier if the preview is in B&W.

I am still experimenting with the process...there is definitely a learning curve. A few samples from the 093 filter are included below.

Here are a few more M240 IR photos. These were shot with the 093 filter on the 21 Super Elmar. Exposure details: F5.6 @ 45 seconds, ISO 200.
