I am subscribing to Leica Fotografie International since 1996. The quality of the magazine has improved a lot in recent years. The magazine tries more to take some distance from the official Leica line when discussing products and developments, but remains rather "soft" in its approach towards Leica. It does not have official ties with Leica Camera as far as I know, but it is regarded as a kind of "house magazine" for the brand.

The difference with Leica World, issued twice a year by Leica itself, is that the latter is -besides coming officially from the house- more geared towards showcasing photographers' works. There is very little product news, and obviously no evaluations. I must say I do rarely like the kind of pictures published in Leica World, it is simply not my style/taste of photography. Sometimes I asked myself the question how a particular work came into the magazine at all. But I guess it is a matter of taste. I have, however, ended my subscription to Leica World this year, after having subscribed to it from the start.

What you could do is order a test magazine from either publisher and compare for yourself what works best for you.

General note on photo magazines: they tend to focus exclusively on digital photography these days, and that is not what I like to see.

I currently subscribe to LFI. It is primarily a Leica publication designed to sell Leica's and focuses on digital Leica's. there are few photographs in an attempt to have one believe the magazine is about Photography. I will not renew. Save your money, buy film and shoot.-Dick

Has anyone submit to Leica Fotografie International?

How is it?

Annibale

If you are asking how to submit work to Lfi, I suggest you write direct to the Editor-in-Chief, Frank P Lohstoter, at IDC Corporate Publishing GMBH, Hammerbrookstr. 93, 20097 Hamburg, Germany. Or email him on mail@lfi-online.com

Despite what the two previous respondants have said, Lfi is not anti-film. The series on Japanese bath houses in the latest, February 2007, was shot with an M6, for instance.

If you looking for "photography" magazines, there are two that I subscribe to and will recommend without reservations:

Lenswork (USA)

Black + White (Australia) ... make sure it is the "Black + White" from down under, not the those from US or UK.

John, I did not say that LFI is "against film". I merely made a general statement regarding photo magazines. Please re-read my earlier posting. Compared to most other photo magazines, LFI does treat film-based photography as (still) relevant. I was actually thinking of leading photo magazines as the French Chasseur d'Images, one of Europe's most widely read and best regarded photo magazines, that focuses almost exclusively on digital photography. When they receive complaints from readers about this, they keep saying they write what the market represents and demands, which is being fueled by customer demand. But apparently they don't realize that by insisting on digital photography they are part themselves of "leading" the customers to believe that there is nothing else which is credible, but digital photography. If you read the published short photographers portfolios, whenever you still have photographers using film-based equipment, there is a comment in the style of "he STILL uses film" or "he thinks about switchting to digital soon", giving an impression that those who are sticking to film must be old-fashioned weirdos. Even if they do not intend to communicate that message, that's the impression the reader could get. Sorry but I do not agree with this. Does anyone know of another photo magazine that treats things in a more balanced way? How is the other French magazine "Réponses Photo"?

The last issues of LFI were all about digital cameras or the technical part of pictures taking with digital cameras.

I miss the articles on film and filmscanners.

They also talked alot of Lightroom and a little about Aperture.

LFI gave the impression that they had tried Lightroom (beta version only?) but not Aperture.

And yes they have published pictures taken with film M's, but I suppose there aren't enough M8 reportages at this moment to use them.

If LFI keep on putting all there eggs in the digital basket, I will not renew my subscription.

Next to my subscription on LFI I also buy almost every month "Réponses Photo". I prefer it above "Chasseur D'Images". Réponses Photo have plenty of digital (we are living in the digital age) but they also keep an eye on analog photography: in nr 181 (april issue) there was a review of the new Fuji Superia color negative films. In previous issues I remember they also reviewed some other films. The ZI body has also been reviewed by Réponses Photo. I also find the magazine reads more with ease when compared to Chasseur D'Images.

It would be perfect if Réponses Photo had a website to consult an index or so.

Basically for wildlife and nature photographers, the German magazine NaturFoto is very evenly balnced for film and digital, with, if anything,a tendency towards film. If one is interested in this type of photography: highly recommended.

The best photographic magazine at this moment is the very expensive "C Photo Magazine":

http://www.ivorypress.com/C_International/

It is a project of Elena Ochoa, Spanish wife of Norman Foster. Just incredible. You must to see one !!!! Two issues per year, two simultaneous editions (English/Chinese and Spanish/Japanese).

I am subscribing to Leica Fotografie International and I am happy wit it. The technical articles are clear, the photographs (mostly film based) are interesting. I like it. The price is fair.

Well, I have just received a renewal notice for my Chasseur d'Images subscription. I think I won't do it and give Réponses Photo a try, based on what others have said about the magazine. My last touch with that magazine dates back several years. The problem is that RP is not easy to get, if at all, in Austria.
