Camera building

Hello old age camera friends there,

Is there a way to realize the month, beside the year, when a camera was built, knowing the serial number?

Thanks for any advise.

Flavio

Flavio,

There are quite a few lists vailable, this one being one of them: Leica Serial Numbers: M's Sorted by Type

This lists M bodies; I am sure that a good Google search will come up with other sources for Thread Mount bodies.

Good luck,

Jan

Thank you Jan. I already knew that list but, as you said, it reports M bodies year though does not about M3 month. M3 seems to be difficult to find out the exact making time and probably even Leitz did not show it at that time. At least this what appear in that cameraquest list. Keeping trying to find.

Good Easter time everybody.

Flavio,

Why don't you post the serial number here, if such a list exists I am sure that somebody will have it. I am in the office and all my reference literature is at home; if I can help, I will.

Hi, Flavio,

I understand your will to find a camera of a certain MONTH, but think it is very difficult... before WWII Leitz had hand-written registries with DAILY details on where a certain s/n camera was shipped : it is not a definitive assurance of date of manufacturing but surely very close. I have never seen similar pages regardings years like '50s... maybe no more hand written... less fascinating to researchers; my advice is to try to contact James Lager, who knows a lot about Leitz deliveries... years ago, he answered to a mail from me detailing when my Telyt 400 f5 was delivered to Cattaneo, Genova (Leitz distributor in the '50s). I have no more his mail adress, but the people around Classic Camera magazine (Milano, editorial group of Tutti Fotografi) surely have it.

Good Luck for your research job.

Ciao Luigi,

a short google search gave me an email account for Mr Lager. I sent him a message but after about 1 week, no replay. Maybe it was not the actual account. I even wonder if there is a way to realize how many M3 Leitz was able to produce each month at that time. Sound like I really need to talk with Mr Lager. :-)

Thanks for the advises everybody.
