Guest DrPix Posted June 20, 2013 Share #1 Posted June 20, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) I´ve been shooting with X Vario a couple of days and am really impressed with the camera. Design (except for the ugly "silver" button on the rear) and ergonomy are great (for me!) I´m not a "spead-freak" so camera´s slow optics don´t bother me. Slow, maybe, but they deliver! Here come some samples (both in fine and gloomy weather conditions). All shot in DNG, developed in LR and tweaked (who doesn´t?), not much, in PS. They are colorfull and contrasty, that´s what I like, who said they should be "documentary". Enjoy! Use Firefox browser preferably; in Explorer the pics look a bit oversaturated! miatadan Posted June 20, 2013 Share #2 Posted June 20, 2013 very impressed with your photos, more I see photos from the X Vario, I tempted to order the X Vario Dan
Guest DrPix Posted June 21, 2013 Share #3 Posted June 21, 2013 Vario is absolutely the best Leica digicam I´ve tested/had (and I had them all, ha ha). If you are not speed/iso freak go for it! Apart from very high IQ the build/feel are just great (except this very ugly silver button at the rear - the designer must have had a hang-over this day). It´s much "better" than M-E with 2 cheapest M-lenses (28 and 70) which I´ve tried and sent back - and which cost almost 4 times more! Jpegs ar so-so (as usual with Leica) but DNG files really shine! barjohn Posted June 21, 2013 Share #4 Posted June 21, 2013 Colors are over saturated and artificial looking. People look horribly orange like a spray on sun tan.
Guest badbob Posted June 21, 2013 Share #5 Posted June 21, 2013 Good lineup of X Vario images. Like one person said, the Kodak look is good for small size viewing, but I hope you have permanent copies that are more the natural color and intensity. You mean like on this little portrait of yours? "Artificial colors"? What are they? Look at some of your pics, with strong magenta cast:) Some like it hot! Ruhayat Posted June 22, 2013 Share #7 Posted June 22, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) The X Vario files continue to look good to me. Colours are saturated like slide film, a good thing for some types of shots. More importantly, they look "organic" like the Digilux 2 jpegs, without the plasticky sheen of D-Lux files. You can always tweak the output to make it look more like Portra. I like that Leica has been following the Kodak look - am not a fan of Fuji film, myself. Earthy browns and brilliant blues for me, thanks.
Ruhayat Posted June 22, 2013 Share #8 Posted June 22, 2013 At this juncture I might end up selling my Pentax K5 and get the X Vario as my playtime digital camera, to complement my two Leica M film cameras which I can use for lowlight and shallow DOF (not really a fan of shallow DOF shots, though, so not that important to me). I'll still have my Canon 5D for full frame digital. With the X Vario and a compact film camera for travel (I say you must, must always have a film camera travelling with you) I'd be all set! Carduelis Posted June 22, 2013 Share #9 Posted June 22, 2013 The specification of the X Vario has taken me by surprise and I am reappraising my camera situation. I was going to wait and buy an M to complement my exisiting Ricoh GXR with A12 Leica mount, but in the meantime I am drawn to the X Vario as a means of obtaining quality and accurately composed and focused images (in a light and compact package) on occasions when time is limited. I am a keen traveller and these situations can occur when you are on the move visiting places and trying to get around the sites taking discrete photos of people as well. farnz Posted June 23, 2013 Share #11 Posted June 23, 2013 Colors are over saturated and artificial looking. People look horribly orange like a spray on sun tan. I agree and they seem significantly more saturated than all of the sample shots posted on the thread that Jono Slack started and the shots in his review. Some like heavily-saturated pictures and others prefer natural-looking pictures. Each to their own I guess. Pete.

pastor_chuck Posted June 24, 2013 Share #13 Posted June 24, 2013 Certainly not undersaturated in Safari. Colors are very bright and vibrant. I'm from the kodachrome school and love the reds. Did you use a filter to get the separation between cloud and sky? The results are very nice.

I´ve toned down the saturation a bit plus there are new 12 pics with people. Looks better? Zenfolio | Andrzej Poniatowski | Ornskoldsvik June 2013 I think your images are fine and provide a useful demonstration of the X Vario. Having handled one last weekend and taken a few images with it, I was very impressed with it with images across the zoom range appearing very sharp from corner to corner with decent colour that I am sure can be readily adjusted for personal taste. I think it is receiving unfair publicity largely by people who have not used it yet. To me a compact Leica camera with a largish cropped 1.5x sensor and a quality zoom lens with a sensible range of 28-70 with autofocus is an attractive proposition. I can appreciate why it has to be f6.4 at the telephoto end and feel I could live with it.
AlanG Posted June 24, 2013 Share #17 Posted June 24, 2013 Your framing is precise and your compositions are nice. No offense, but these are all static subjects in bright light. Plus color can always be adjusted to taste from any raw file. Can't any camera do this with variations in resolution of course? How is it for shooting any kind of action/lifestyle in good and bad light? Can it track focus on a subject coming towards you?

How is it for shooting any kind of action/lifestyle in good and bad light? Can it track focus on a subject coming towards you? It is horses for courses and I feel that there is no ideal camera that can satisfy everyone. I feel that you have to balance the pros with the cons and judge whether the camera is for you. If I was serious about taking action images, assuming movement is inferred I would not use a Leica and would use a digital SLR with the latest motor drives and AF systems instead. However, my interests are largely travel and landscape photography particularly whilst out hiking and I feel that I could get by with an X Vario. How about a situation at a wedding where you are there with an expensive Leica M and an assortment of fixed manual focus lenses. The other guests and the official wedding photographers are there with their Canikons and autofocus zoom lenses and are taking pictures very quickly with people posing and reacting relatively quickly. With the Leica M you have to decide in advance which fixed lens is best suited for the photograph, wasting valuable time if you have to change it, then you have to try and move into a suitable position for composition and then focus the lens manually trying to absolutely nail the focus. With an X Vario, I could imagine this task being alot easier unless you are very well practised with the Leica M.
wok64 Posted June 24, 2013 Share #19 Posted June 24, 2013 Hi, are you using the "vivid" setting for JPEGs? In standard setting I find the colors much less saturated in my camera. Still, nice Images. By the way, Steve Huff just published my Initial thoughts on the camera. Best regards, Wolfgang

However, my interests are largely travel and landscape photography particularly whilst out hiking and I feel that I could get by with an X Vario. I understand all of that and if I were shooting pro sports I would use a 1DX or similar. But since this camera has AF, I am just asking how well does it work for normal stuff? Can you shoot kids running around and get most in focus? I presume if you don't shoot this sort of thing, you might not be the one to ask. But even hiking I find that there are action shots of friends going over a rock scramble for instance or to capture a fleeting expression. These may not be fast action but still require a decent level of responsiveness. Anyhow it was just an observation that while your photos are fine I'm not sure what they tell me about the camera.
