LXV B&W conversion in mac photos

Just a matter of curiosity on my behalf, so don't take it any other way than that. Why convert in the Mac?

When I am using my X-Vario, I usually use it in JPEG mode, they are that good. But when we travel, places we are unlikely to visit again, I up the ante and use DNG + JPEF super fine. I often set the JPEG to mono, as I love the mono files I get, straight out of the camera too. If the scene is one of those blazing with colour scenes, and it is unlikely to look good in B&W I'll change it to colour, but 99% of the time I am in B&W mode with mine. X1 as well, same, stunning B&W files.

Leica X Vario plus two £10 Ikea Jansjo 'Swan Neck' lamps positioned at 45º below the shell … and one modified Jansjo lamp above the specimen providing incident lighting to the opaque centre of the shell.  Lamp heads were 'snooted' with paper funnels to provide directional illumination. Shell was supported from underneath with Blue Tak on a long dowel - and in a large box lined with black velvet.  The longish dowel is necessary to 1) provide clearance for the transilluminating lamps & 2) keep the black velvet background texture out of focus.  Black velvet absorbs any light spillage to prevent hot spots appearing in the final image - but it's also a standard background for darkfield lighting. The basic darkfield transillumination lighting technique is well documented e.g. in Heather Angel's books. The XV was at its close-focus limit but will focus closer with the addition of supplementary close-up lenses e.g. modified Leitz Elpro IVb or Elpro 2 - both 4.92 diopters. Don't try this technique with black paper or black card because they both reflect light causing flare and hot spots.  My avatar image is part of another Nautilus photo taken on Velvia film many years ago using an R4 and 100mm Macro Elmar.

I was using dng+JPEG with vivid as it was such a beautiful day at Hever. I like the vivid setting and prefer to convert to mono on my Mac rather than the pc as I find it's simpler for me. If I really want to go B&W I would take the Monochrom instead.
