Windmill control

Most windmills need to turn their sails to get the best from the wind, and to follow it as it veers whilst they are grinding cereals. The small vanes (rather like the tail rotor of a helicopter) do this job for Thaxted windmill in Essex. Taken with a 90mm Summarit on an M9.

Thanks everybody for your kind words, I'm pleased the subject was of interest. To literally provide the full picture I append a photograph of the windmill. As you can see from the original photo as the vanes turn gearing transmits the motion to a toothed, stationary wheel below the windmill's roof (strictly the cap). This toothed wheel runs round the entire circumference of the structure. The axle of the sail is fixed to the cap and turns with it.

Thanks for including this shot so we can see the full context of the original version.
