Apple Camera RAW 4.06 and Leica MM.

I just downloaded the latest Apple Camera RAW update with the illusion that it would support the Leica MM. Sadly it does not, however, it does support the brand new Hasselblad Lunar. I have to wonder if the MM fell through the cracks in Cupertino and they just don't know that they do not yet support it...

I think enough of us have put in formal requests.....

Its really getting me down as I just don't get on with LR...

I hear you. I am closer and closer to end up moving to Lightroom. It's not my preference, although there are some features I really miss in Aperture. But the modal approach to working and the YU are a big turn off for me. Plus, I have all my history of work properly loaded and organized in Aperture. We'll have to see.

I sent them some more feedback along the lines "Why on earth support the Hasselblad Lunar - of which about three examples have been sold - and not the MM, which still has people on waiting lists 9 months after introduction?" Politely put, of course.

Isn't the Hasselblad Lunar just a Sony Nex in a different case?

Exactly! My first reaction when I saw the Lunar listed on the RAW support was: Well, the MM is a niche camera and not a lot around when compared to the Nikon D7100, but c'mon the Lunar is even more a niche camera... then I realized that it is just a Nex-7 rebranded (and made ridiculously ugly IMO). So no surprise it was supported even before it was launched.

It is indeed very very frustrating the wait. The camera has been released more than a year now (although a non-beta firmware has just been released). I am currently shooting RAW+JPG, using the JPG to sort and keyword. If I need to work on the file a bit more, I use a very nice script from Apertureexpert.com (AppleScript: Open Master in). It opens the RAW file in LR and then you can export back to Aperture. It cost only a dollar and its a good work around for now.

On a note regarding the support. I was told Apple is working on supporting the Monochrom. I emailed Tim Cook late last year and in January I got a response form the Aperture Team stating that they are working on it. They don't rely only on the info provided by the manufacturer and all cameras have their sensors profiled by Apple. Maybe that's why they got the Fuji Xtrans sensor right. They mentioned that the MM was making its way into Apple's hands in January. Hopefully they will get the MM sensor right as well. It is painful to wait and see all those MM files accumulating but in the meantime I am fine tuning my workflow and making sure I get all the metadata right (location, keywords, faces etc...).

Hopefully we won't wait too much longer.

Back in the day when the M8 was the only Leica Digital M, I was an Aperture user. Living in San Francisco, Apple Country (sort of), the chief developer was always out and about giving Presentations on what a fine tool Aperture was. I'd see him at meetings etc. probably 12 times a year. I constantly asked him face to face why the camera was not supported. "Well, it's a small camera base and Leica does not seem to be able to get the firmware right". Excuse after excuse. Got to the point he would see me coming and walk the other way.

I think it was a year and a half, two years before Apple took the plunge.

Moral of the story, Good Luck.

Switched to LR Beta and never looked back

I hear you. I waited for a while when I got first got the M8. I have not yet used the MM for a documentary project. We are still getting acquainted. When I do produce a project with it, what it's now an annoyance it's going to become an issue, and might be what I need to tip me over to Lightroom. I keep giving Apple some time for a refresh to Aperture and to add the MM to the RAW support. I'll know soon enough which way to lean. Thanks for sharing.

The M9 converter in Aperture is very good, so don't know why there should be a issue with MM, apart from what must be a very small user group. Others on this Forum are reporting the M (Type 240) works fine on Aperture without specific profiles - advantage of a "generic" DNG I guess.

My understanding it's that the fact of being a monochrome sensor generates a whole new sets of challenges in terms of creating the RAW conversion. In fact I love the M9 RAW support in Aperture. Cannot complaint in that regard.

Yes, it is a linear DNG with no de-mosaicing needed by the converter. All the same, it can't be wildly complicated since the shareware Graphic Converter can open them. I use it to save them as TIFs and then place those in Aperture.

I have read here that importing both DNG and JPG into Aperture, then adjusting the JPG will permit, should DNG support ever arrive, the choice of selecting the DNG as the master and all adjustments made to the JPG will appear on the DNG. I'm just not sure that would be a good thing as the JPG already has had a fair amount of in-camera processing before anything has been added in Aperture.

Chris,

Indeed processing the DNG has to be different from the JPG. I was mostly referring to cropping, rating etc. Not ideal for sure. Hopefully support will come soon.
