gloec Posted April 4, 2007 Share #1 Posted April 4, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Unfortunately, I have only one battery for my M8 and after all the reading I have done in this fantastic forum, I am a little bit confused on when I should recharge the battery. Should, I leave the battery in the camera until it is fully discharged or should I put it in the charger earlier? So far, I never had any battery concerns with my other digital cameras (Canon EOS 10D, 20D, 5D) but now I am scared to death with my M8... Thanks in advance! chetccox Posted April 4, 2007 Share #2 Posted April 4, 2007 You should recharge the battery whenever you want to. It is Lithium ion, and it should not matter. I have 3 Leica batteries. I charge them whenever, and have no problems with any of them. I have never discharged them as some have recommended, and they continue to work flawlessly. You should not be concerned. It is Leica's problem to find and repair the battery/charger problem, if that is what is causing these issues (which I doubt).
j. borger Posted April 4, 2007 Share #3 Posted April 4, 2007 No need for paranoia in advance Nikos: you only read the bad storys here! I have 2 batteries ..... both performing excellent with zero issues and very long lasting: in cold & warm weather! I never did anything special with them ... after a shoot i put the used battery in the charger: sometimes this means the batery is still half full, sometimes it is almost empty. It is no secret however it is good for the pergormance of any battery to empty the battery completely before charging from time to time ...... Guest sirvine Posted April 4, 2007 Share #4 Posted April 4, 2007 Is it bad to leave batteries in the charger for long stretches?
rami G Posted April 4, 2007 Share #5 Posted April 4, 2007 Is it bad to leave batteries in the charger for long stretches? There is not such issue with Li Ion batteries, such as the ones used in the M8. They do not get "over-charged" (I believe it is even stated in the M8 booklet). However, many products in which Li ion batteris are using suggest to charge the batteries as often as possible to maximize life cycle. (see Palm products, Sony Errison...) gloec Posted April 4, 2007 Author Share #6 Posted April 4, 2007 That's what I do with with the batteries in my 5D. I charge them everytime I finish shooting and the same I was planning to do with the M8 battery. But after reading all the threads relating the sudden death with the M8 battery I was a little bit worried. Thanks for your advice!!! scott kirkpatrick Posted April 4, 2007 Share #7 Posted April 4, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Maximum life with Li-Ion batteries is achieved by recharging them each chance you get. A Li-Ion charger starts with a high rate, constant current charge, and finishes off with a constant voltage slower, "trickle" charge phase, then stops completely when a maximum voltage is reached. So it should do no harm to leave it in the charger, since the charger should switch itself off. And apparently it is easier on the battery to operate in the "trickle" part of its regime. This has been the subject of several previous threads, and two posters who have worked with batteries and charging circuitry (not me) have supported this view, also with links to manufacturer's recommendations. That does not stop other opinions from appearing, but I think this is the right recommendation. scott
rwfreund Posted April 4, 2007 Share #8 Posted April 4, 2007 The short answer is to just use them and recharge them as you see fit. The exceptions to this rule are: 1) if you intended to store the battery unused for a long time (say a year or two), in which case, its life is maximized when charged to 40%, but how do you know where that is? 2) Over time the circuit that keeps track of the battery capacity may git a bit off-track, say after 25-50 cycles. It may at that time erroneously report the battery status and cause the camera to not accuratly display the battery's charge level. This can be re-set with a discharge cycle or three. at least that is my opinion after reading all the specs I could lay my hands on. -bob
