Anybody help ?

Thinking of a 21mm for my film M. Don't like the idea of add on finder. If I frame using the whole of the finder window will I be far out ?

A big Leica collector friend told me when I got my first Leica M4-2 the whole finder was close to a 28mm

Yes, it will be far out. I don't  think you can work properly without an external finder.

Thanks for your help. Perhaps it's not for me then.

I popped a mate's 21mm onto my M6 yonks ago, and slipped the external finder into the hot shoe. Was a bit weird to switch between the usual viewfinder for focusing and the add on finder for framing, but it did work.

In the end I decided it wasn't romantic to use the external finder and actually bought a 28mm Elmarit instead that I also tried that evening.

Had a bit of a shock when the pickies were developed. The difference between the FOV of the 21mm over the 28mm was immense. See for yerself, both pickies were taken from the same spot.

I fancy the VC 21MM after seeing photoklaus's wonderful shots

I can't say anything bad about the lens. I own the older chrome M39- Version, but the newer M- Mount Version should have the same optics.

It is very well made and a joy to use. And you don't need a lot of space in your camera bag for it.

Thanks Ric for the test 21-28.

Trev, it also interests me 21 , but when I see it takes an external viewfinder , I hesitate
I think if you take a lot of landscape photos or photos of architecture you will need a 21
Otherwise the 28 should be sufficient under "standard" conditions.

For street photos I mainly use 28 as Adam or sometimes 35.
Elsewhere , simply back a little a few meters and you arrive to photograph the same thing :)

We use most his 28 than its 21 and it sometimes already vignette (I mean with 28) .

We can love the distorting effect  of 21 or not.

the difference between 35 and 28 is interesting per example for landscapes.

Trev do you have already a 35 or 28  ?

Best

Don't have the Voigtlander 21mm, but the 25mm; the old style one, not rangefinder coupled but sweet and small

and with screw mount. Distances have to be estimated, though with the depth of field of an f4/25 that is not a

problem. On the M you could use the Rangefinder window, instead of an external finder; it covers the entire area

plus an extra bit, but not an unmanageable extra bit...

Oh boy, all this talk and thinking of the 21mm, it has my GAS levels rising.

Time for a bit of colour, it will keep the Doc happy.

Some Fuji RDP, and some Kodak E100.

I add colour, Ektar and Graffiti, then Adam will also be happy when he returns from the beach...

Henry. I have 28 & 35. My thinking was because I take a lot of motorbike shots. Sometimes they are parked close together and something wider would be useful.

its not killing me to mostly use 28mm

i'm not going to use an external finder...
