Ideal Black/White starter film.

I have been gradually migrating from digital back to film using C41 colour but now want to move into Black/white but am rather confused with all the options and comparison reviews around the internet.

I shall shoot with my Leica R3 and film will be lab processed. I intend starting at box speed for pretty general topics. I have been shooting Ektar 100 for colour but it looks like most B/W is rated ISO400 with nothing between 100 and 400. I notice there is also a C41 B/W film but do not understand what advantage that gives. Prices certainly vary with Ilford/Kodak at one end thern Fuji Acros much more expensive, but I wonder whether quality follows price?  Which ever I start with I want good quality shots while I gain confidence before moving forward to experimentation.

I would welcome any input from the more experienced B/W film users.

If you like Ektar 100 in color which is sharp, low grain and saturated, then maybe try some things like Ilford Delta 100 and Kodak TMAX 100. My personal favorite is the TMAX films. I also love Ilford Pan F 50+ for something really low grain on sunny days. I found when I first started shooting black and white I tried to stick with one or two films and really got to understand them. Jumping around and trying lots of things as it can get quite confusing to what works for different films.

Look forward to seeing your photos!

There is this thing- probably a technical photography term of which I am ignorant- that to my mind results in a photograph more perfectly matching the memory of the moment, as opposed to presenting a perfect technical presentation of the actual subject at the time. Sort of like what your head creates as you ponder the past.....without benefit of having the photo in front of your eyes.  This photo has that thing. Thanks. It is perfect.

Best,

Wayne

The diagonals in the background that mirror the model's arms is oh so subtle. Applause for the way you orchestrate backgrounds in your studies. Mesmerizing model channeling Medusa.

Bravo and welcome to "true" (🙂) photography! I wonder why you are intent to start out shooting at box speed. Nothing wrong with that, of course. But because digital generally recovers shadows but not blown highlights, while negative film is generally the opposite, I suspect a lot of us simply rate film at around 1/3 EV slower than box to preserve shadow detail. The classic example is to rate Tri-X at 320. But experimenting with film ratings, especially in B&W, is a large part of the fun.
