It is with trepidation that I comment. It is a brilliant photograph........But, I could not understand why I keep coming back to it. After long consideration, I conclude it has something to do with the shape of the hair, and the fact that the photographer, presumably, took it in OZ. I am reminded of the adorable Koala. A subtle humanization of the mating trigger for that furry beast? :)

Best,

Wayne

Happy New Year, fellow Leica film likers!

To begin 2023 I thought I might post a few portraits from a  project in which I was involved a few years ago. I had the honour and privilege of photographing alongside our niece, Ashleigh, who is an award-winning photographer now living and working in Italy. We photographed at The Wellington in inner-city Melbourne which describes itself as "a community centre located in the heart of Collingwood, a place for social interaction and support to redress disadvantage, cultural and social isolation in our local community." It was a very enjoyable project, meeting some of the people there, hearing their varied, fascinating and at time heart-wrenching stories and (of course) photographing them. Ashleigh and I exhibited many of our photographs, each accompanied by a snippet of the subject's story (many of which were self-penned), as part of the Ballarat International Foto Biennale 2013. One of the nicest aspects of the whole project was the day we accompanied many of the subjects on a 116km train-ride up to Ballarat to view the exhibition and have a really nice, laughter-filled lunch all together.

All photographed with a Leica M6TTL, either 50mm or 90mm Summicron, Tri-X.

Steven: I am a 40y.o. recovering drug addict and gambler. Now a bible reading Christian who tries to help others who have been through similar hardships.

What an opening salvo to celebrate the coming year, backward glancing as a way of looking forward, forever now. You certainly capture something heartfelt here with Steven's eyes reading right into the camera. With your feet squarely anchored on the ground, Phil, you always manage to bring it home. I look forward to more of these portraits and the echo of their narratives. What an admirable, cinematic film in freeze frames that speak.

I controlled the grain by 1:90 HC110, 19 minutes. Just a guess. Worked pretty well for this application.

Such an engaging metaphor for the photographer always zigzagging "on to new puddles."

Yes. Exactly. What could be worse than getting stuck in puddle? :) Maybe HRT had it wrong: the object is not to jump over the puddles, it is to splash in as many as you can.

Happy New Year, Roger.

I am with you, Wayne, for splashing in as many puddles as I can. All the best wishes to you and your family—Happy New Year.

Cheers, Roger

Masterful timing with the play of shadows, which Ernst Gombrich would certainly applaud. This is in the "forever now" club. So cinematic, this freeze frame.

Fotomas, great photo. Seemingly simple composition, but everything finds its place.

Wayne, your ongoing documentary of your family is a great contribution to the forum. It´s unpretentious, full of sympathy, always interesting and makes us smile. Thank you for showing. Hoping for more. And the more than rare combinations of cameras and films are the cherry on the cake...

And Happy New Year to you, Phil, and all!

What a wonderful, wonderful portrait, really capturing and honoring Steven's spirit and determination. There's a whole lived life in those eyes, but a better future as well.

Congratulations, Phil, and looking forward to more being posted.
