Hi Chris.

Thanks for all of this. Much appreciated.

I have been using chromogenic film pretty much exclusively since XP1 came out, and I love it. Originally I used Ilford’s processing kit (no longer available), and now I have it commercially processed in C41. The results are (IMO) perfect. Very fine grain, very sharp, and a beautiful long tone range (exactly what I aim for). And very forgiving of modest exposure mistakes. Tests and experience point to 200ASA as being optimal – and Ilford’s documentation supports that, notwithstanding the box speed.

Your results in HC110 are impressive – seemingly as nice as I can get in C41. It makes me wonder – was Ilford’s developer in their old kit actually just a normal or slightly adjusted B&W developer? I wonder also (maybe you know), is your resulting image a dye cloud image, or is it a normal silver image? It matters very slightly due to the Callier effect – related to non-linear dispersal of light by different levels of silver in negatives. No silver, no Callier effect. So this doesn’t happen with the dye clouds in C41-processed XP2.

Your less-than-optimal results with Diafine do not surprise. IMO this developer was always a last ditch option. Even Rodinal, which normally produces exemplary sharpness with higher grain, seems to have the same effect on XP2.

For what it is worth, I don’t “push” or “pull” film. I might need a tripod, or other solid thing, and sometimes you simply can’t make photographs. No light, no pictures. Get over it.

Your results at 50ASA or 25ASA will be interesting. I have found that “thick” XP2 negatives scan very badly, but wet print well (very long enlarger exposures).

Again, thanks.

I don't know about Ilford's kit - but it should be obvious if it was a c-41 kit from the colour of the solutions (one like madeira, and one like port).

I'm sure the image is dye, as it is possible to overdevelop them into very dark negatives, and there probably isn't enough silver in the emulsion to get them that dark. Also they are purple and not black, again arguing for dye.

Well, I have capitulated, sort of, there is plenty implosion/explosion going on, why not join in.

I'd hankered/lusted after an SWC for about 50 years, and located one last year, enjoying it.

I had also had the same desires for a nice Pen FT, and the urge got too strong recently, with a few of the more persuasive members posting images from them.

Now have a pair, not one, a pair, some people never learn. Plus a 25mm and a 38mm. As they were new to me, I felt the need to establish that they indeed worked, so snapped a few random shots yesterday.

Looks like they're working fine, Gary. Are you enjoying the acquisitions?

Ilford's kit is long gone (sadly IMO). And I don't remember the fluid colours. Since finding commercial C41 processing is becoming more problematic or inconvenient, your approach has increasing allure, particularly given your excellent results. Cheers to you and Nova Scotia.

Followed quickly by this wonderful example of Wayne's using the magnificent Adox Color a Implosion, and exploiting grain to become the co-star of the show. Fantastic, love it. But jealous too, as I cannot find a source of Color Implosion in the British Isles, or anywhere in the near continent.
