Doc Henry Posted August 18, 2017 Author Share #38543 Posted August 18, 2017 (edited) Good pick-up Wayne. The 60mm macro is the one lens I really miss from when I had an R8 - but I don't miss the weight of the Leica SLR gear. Anyway, a couple from last year exploring the joys of tourism: (both) Boston 2016 M6TTL, 35mm Summicron (top) and 28mm Elmarit (lower), Tri-X Phil , you have one soldier who told you "stop" For the picture 1, my thought is : why not walk ? nice black tone Phil Nice capture and great pictures Thank you Henry Edited August 18, 2017 by Doc Henry
christoph_d Posted August 18, 2017 Share #38544 Posted August 18, 2017 The more I begin to understand the kind of light in which it excels, the more I like Cinestill 800T: Last Christmas eve Nikon F90X, AF Nikkor 50mm f1.4, Cinestill 800T Phil, A very nice picture indeed. And I appreciate your point of view. Initially one is tempted to see the rather pronounced "characteristics" of those films as a nuisance, only to appreciate them the more, the more one understands in which situations they really work. And for me at least, there was an initial dissatisfaction as I always also see situations in which other characteristics would work better, a bit like seeing colour motives when walking around with a b&w film, or having a 50mm lens on your camera when the motive cries out for a tele ...In the end, for me, the "restrictions" imposed by those films really help me to "see" and to concentrate on suitable motives, and I am convinced that leads to better photographs. stray cat Posted August 18, 2017 Share #38545 Posted August 18, 2017 Yes Phil wonderful color with the artistic side , no equivalent elsewhere It's like a painting with the grain... something when you look you remember not the case with a synthesis image with aproximate color Thank you Phil for your demonstration that we can have something , more beautiful with film in this case Cinestill 800 Best Henry Excellent timing here, Phil. The hand covering the face and the audience's rapt attention create a dynamic photo. And the one below looks like a painting. Thanks sincerely, Doc and Philip - it means a lot to me. Also, what you said about your journey back to film, Henry. It's kind of wonderful to think that film isn't just being used because it's the "only game in town", but that people make a very, very conscious decision based on reasons like the ones you've given. We read time and time again about how digital is technically superior - and I've no doubt it is - yet some of us still prefer film, with all its expense and attendant deficiences. It says a lot and, again one has to marvel at the incredible images constantly presented on this increasingly popular thread - like those beautifully-observed everyday motifs above by Philip and Arti - because photography causes us to look closer at such things, and in turn to notice them ourselves - and we should all be collectively quite proud I think. And please let me not forget to thank Henry here for his enthusiasm and energetic stewardship of this marvellous forum.

Rgds Christoph Thank you Christoph, and I couldn't agree more with your idea of "restrictions" in fact opening up possibilities. And I must thank you for my re-looking at Cinestill, as (especially) your Italian walking pictures made me very interested in using this sort of light and "different" kinds of films - or at least, as I'd already in some cases taken the pictures, your pictures helped me - taught me - to see the value in the pictures I'd otherwise have dismissed or overlooked. wattsy Posted August 18, 2017 Share #38548 Posted August 18, 2017 last week, while I was shooting my "Dying Mall" shots, I was spotted by the security cameras and a "mall cop" rolled out to me, mounted on his trusty Segway, to advise me that photography was not allowed. I was a bit disappointed, but had to laugh as he rolled away. I could not help but wonder..........does the death of the mall also mean the demise of the Segway? Amusing and depressing, Wayne. Could be a small scene in a dystopian sci-fi film set in the near future.

A miller Posted August 18, 2017 Share #38553 Posted August 18, 2017 (edited) Love this one, Jean Marc. It reminds me of a famous photograph, which I can't unfortunately put my finger on right now. You might consider whether it is completely level. Could be the laptop tilted on my lap! Tri-X pushed a stop on GR1V Ricoh Untitled by JM__, on Flickr Thanks, Steve. We would have fun out here together. There's lots of CHALLAH!! :) Knowing you I know this story is completely true.....Here is a good trick for the next you misplace the phone for your stop watch -- count out loud the seconds! I have learned how to match a long time ago for other reasons and once you do the difference will be too small to notice. The couple has obviously scratched you out of their will :-)!!!!! Can't wait to see the output! Congrats. The 50 DR is a fantastic lens. Right up your alley. I have mine on my M3 right now here in Israel. I just love the classic rendering. Much like th classic look of your photos of your family that you have shared. As for the color of the vulcanite, I would vote for baby blue as a first choice and navy as my second choice. The baby blue would, IMHO, look cool with the chrome There is much to see and enjoy in this thread lately. It is interesting to see the very different approaches and I keep coming back day after day. At the moment I am eagerly awaiting some films to be processed by the lab and have to develop a roll of Silvermax soon. If one of these rolls contains something that looks like a picture, I will likely spoil some pages in here As time goes by, the postman left something for me at the front door again - a sibling for my trusted M4-P. I was on the lookout for an M3 for my Cron 50 DR for some time now and just got this work horse. As it seems, all the times are working perfectly. On the downside there is some dust in the finder and the viewfinder shows the frames for 50 and 90 at the same time. The vulcanite needs a complete overhaul, but I can't decide which fancy color from Aki-Asahi will suit my new companion best. Black would be the classic choice, but I think that navy blue or green might look stunning in contrast to the chrome finish of the camera and the Cron. What do you think? From "Living Like This" Manchester UK. Like most things in our lives, life is good if you have money but if not you are at rock bottom and life is bleak. It is a tenuous thread that we hang on to that keeps us from losing it all - it is all so easy for it to break and let us fall. It is embarrassing to worry about Leica's and lenses etc. and I think long and hard before making such images. Not so long ago I was at a crossroads and I thought that it was all exploitative and I wouldn't raise my Leica's to this but on balance I think that photography is a tool to lift the lid on that world that perhaps we would rather turn away and not see. Leica M6 with 35mm Summicron lens. Film is Kodak TRI-X in D76. Really lovely, Phil. I also like the rendering of this; very unique palette. The more I begin to understand the kind of light in which it excels, the more I like Cinestill 800T: Last Christmas eve Nikon F90X, AF Nikkor 50mm f1.4, Cinestill 800T This one is really great. Mamiya 645 AFDII - Fuji Neopan 400 - Kodak D-76 Ha, ha, Phil. Just as your post came through I had just arrived a the Dead Sea for my third morning in a row (it was about 5am). But as I said before, we are only as strong as our weakest link. And today, my weakest link was THAT I LEFT MNY FILM BACK HOME IN JERUSALEM!!! All of that 90 minute driving in the middle of the night and I arrived without any ammo except for a half roll of Ektar. I AM SUCH AN IDIOT!! I had had 6 shots on it. And the miracle of Hanukkah (in which a tiny amount of oil lasted for 8 days) wasn't happening. So I have to make one last trek as I cam across this structure which looks cool against the colorful waters and dawn sky. Fair enough Adam. Anyway I hope you continue to enjoy it over there, and look forward very much to seeing the film results as they come through. Welcome, dear visitor! Doc Henry Posted August 18, 2017 Author Share #38555 Posted August 18, 2017 Last seen. Leica SL (black paint, with just a tiny glint of brass visible at top angles of prism,) 60mm Macro-Elmarit 2.8, TriX, HC110 1/63, 9 minutes img632.JPG So a man starts an excellent thread based on his love of film; another man, who takes excellent macro shots of beautiful butterflies casually comments " it could probably be done as well, and more economically, with an SLR" in a PM to an interested novice who inquired concerning the man's equipment; the novice takes the advise to heart and winds up fully enjoying a delightful combination that has been orphaned by the digital age. I sense a certain irony in the fact that all of this happened by virtue of the internet. Best, Thanks to all, and in this instance, especially Henry and Ian. Wayne Posted August 18, 2017 Share #38559 Posted August 18, 2017 Amusing and depressing, Wayne. Could be a small scene in a dystopian sci-fi film set in the near future. Yes. One of the things that goes through my mind when I take these photographs is the thought that it might appear I am dragging this tricycle around and placing it in these various locations. Not so. All of the photographs have been shot in an area about one half the size of a city block. Somebody, probably a small child, is still pedaling this thing around. It is, on a certain level, very depressing.....However, for some reason, I prefer to dwell on the determination of the kid and hope to some day meet, or at least see, him or her. The building that appears in the background is a distillery. It used to be owned by Seagrams but is now owned by another company. Welcome, dear visitor!
