A miller Posted July 9, 2017 Share #35822  Posted July 9, 2017 Gary/Ian - Yes I did bring wire cutters.  And I did make a hole this morning and shoot from it.  But it wasn't this one; it was more toward the middle of the bridge where I started shooting before dawn (the holes are patched up very regularly; sometimes holes have already been re-made in the places you want; other times fence along the bridge it fully patched up and you have to take matters into your own hands ) .  I figure that I pay enough NYC income taxes to cover the repair job! Bring your own wire-cutters? Gary   Is a pair of wire cutters part of your landscape kit, Adam? ;-)

Popular Post blackandwhite Posted July 9, 2017 Popular Post Share #35827  Posted July 9, 2017 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello to all of You - I took some time to look at Your superb pics as I always do, but I also read some of Your thoughts about Photography. To me, Photo-graphy means light-draw, drawing with light. Not calculating a picture from the upper corner on the left to the bottom corner on the right. I use a digital camera for professional stuff I have to take a picture of - because it is an easy, fast way of doing. To say this has anything to do with Photography or to say it would be a source of pleasure or of personnal interest is impossible to me. It would be as if I'd say a world-famous Hamburger Restaurant would be in any way comparable to Paul Bocuse . Or a master's painting to a poster. This does not mean I can afford Bocuse or any other chef's restaurant more than once in 5 or ten years... or that I never eat an industrial Hamburger. It also does not mean I think the photos I shoot are of any great quality. But the pleasure to shoot film, mesure the light, try to find a nice picture or shoot at the right moment like a hunter, be serious and curious just as a child when develloping the film, then happy as on Christmas eve when this or that negative seems to be great and dries overnight... then being develloping on paper next evening and having the impression of a little miracle every time the image appears - no digital camera offers any of these emotions. And never will. To take pictures with exactly the same ( Voigtländer) camera my father used to take pics of me in 1958 and that he offered me in 1969 and that still works - I do not believe any of the modern cameras will perform for decades, even if well taken care of. To work with a vintage Meopta Magnifax to get the final pictures - so perfectly unperfect, so perfect in a very poetical way - to me a source of pleasure, like meditation or Yoga or similar to other people. Emotions, pleasure, possibility to know what one does and why one does it - to learn - I do not find these essential things in digital picture making. These, aswell as image quality reasons, are why I stay with film and old-school Photography. Also, I do think this wonderful art - as it is an art - might disappear, just as so many artforms have disappeared or are disappearing sooner or later. Personnal thoughts. Not true for most people, probably. But these are the reason's why I go on with film. Jean-Marie  (Photo shot by my dad with the Bessa he bought in 1948) in 1958, selftimer & tripod. Exactly the same camera I use along with my Leica and the Rolleiflex...) The little man on the pic is me, with dad, mum and my brother.  Welcome, dear visitor! Â Â The more I look at this picture, Ian, the more it occurs to me that it is a very very special landscape picture - the scale of the person in the landscape, the light on her and the wind movement - are masterful. A wonderful picture.

Doc Henry Posted July 10, 2017 Author Share #35839  Posted July 10, 2017 (edited) Forgiveness Jean-Marie to cut your comment above https://www.l-camera-forum.com/topic/205842-i-like-filmopen-thread/?p=3311997   "Photo-graphy means light-draw, drawing with light"  exactly JM and acurate measure of light , impression on a sensitive support or reproduction of what you see, no approximate color as you can see in digital  "easy, fast way of doing it’s" the habit of the majority of people is in the hurry  "source of pleasure or of personnal interest (it belongs to open culture and art)"  exactly JM a source of pleasure, have time to compose , choice of the subject, choice of good framing, brief take time  and wait (patience is not in the vocabulary of people now)  ..."world-famous Hamburger and Bocuse" …. Between Bocuse and industrial hamburger … I know where you’ll go ,  the  quality first , Otherwise if I cannot i abstain  "pleasure to shoot film, mesure the light, try to find a nice picture or shoot at the right moment like a hunter, be serious and curious just as a child when develloping the film" well said JM  "develloping on paper next evening and having the impression of a little miracle every time the image appears - no digital camera offers any of these emotions. And never will. Meopta Magnifax to get the final pictures - so perfectly unperfect, so perfect in a very poetical way - to me a source of pleasure, like meditation or Yoga or similar to other people".  The print is the ultimate satisfaction of what we photographed and with the enlarger we can choose our angle of view, enlarge, look for the large format of paper that corresponds to what we want (landscape, portrait etc ...)  "I do not believe any of the modern cameras will perform for decades", 6500 Euros one Leica camera , obsolete after some years , because of pixels and isos races who distort the original source ! Emotions, pleasure, But these are the reason's why I go on with film.  A good conclusion Jean-Marie and you are right Thanks for your comment Jean-Marie  We are in "I like film" thread and I want to thank the interventions of Jean-Marie, Phil, Chris and other contributors because it brings warm to heart , to see the true photographers express themselves  Again thank you All.
