Gotland

You entranced all Beowulf readers at that point! Lovely snowdrops, by the way. The only sign of spring here is that one of the many chipmunks I feed came out of hibernation today.

This thread has seen some truly terrific flower photography so I thought I should try some myself. When I was on Gotland two weeks ago I pointed my camera at various snowdrops in my mother's garden. Like many plants they're quite easy to shoot, being stationary for one, but the main problem for me was the wind. These little flowers catch a surprising amount of wind and always seem to move. The other challenge was the almost non-existent depth of field using one or both of my extension rings (16 and 32).

Philip - This is a 10 out of 10.  Wonderful in every way.  Deserves a place on your wall or - since it is so peaceful to look at - your office :)

I'm not sure how these look when posted. On my iPhone the evening photos look very clumpy, but on the MacBook they are just fine. I need to find a better method of posting these.

Kind regards

Great photos.  Before I saw the location I thought Ballybunion.  Not too far away...

very interesting results, Christopher.  Some of them have a "lomo" look.  Thanks for sharing!

So I have been through a few rolls of film through my new man toy, the Olympus XA, which is a rangefinder camera that has a 35mm f2.8 Zuiko lens.

The focus patch is a little faint but the results have me encouraged...

Here are a few throw away samples (testing focus, exposure, how the lens rendered tones, etc) from my recent business trip to Hong Kong two weeks ago...

These are with Tri-X, which I rated at 800 and developed at 1250 (which produced nice contrast at the expense of some sharpness)...

This was shot wide open...

Adam

I need to have another go at developing some of these. The truth is that some of them are probably too light in the shadows. The one with the moon in and the one with the cyclist should be darker. I got a bit taken back by the amount of shadow detail in my scans. The shots are almost perfect HDR candidates. My exposure times on these were really long (around 1 sec) and the cameras were mostly perched on top of wooden fence posts to take them at 5.6-8.

Truth is I got to my location too late. I forgot how small the roads were to get there. I just about made it with 30 minutes of useable light. It was a learning curve. Next time I'll take a tripod! Better still perhaps I'll leave one in my car boot, I've enough of them.

I was just desperate to shoot off the ends of two films. What's annoyed me most is the clumpy grain I got after uploading to Flickr and downloading to my iPhone before posting. The images were destroyed. I ended up resizing on my Mac and Airdropping them on to my iPhone. Even now the results are mediocre. I need a better workflow.

Thanks for your comment, it will drive my efforts to improve.

Regards

Christopher

Adam I particularly enjoy this one and would not consider it to be a throw away shot. The XA is a fine camera I should get out with mine more. The attached picture was taken many years ago on Ektachrome.

Adam, Your results of the Oly XA looks very nice. I bought the same camera two year ago. Unfortunately the XA did not work fine so I gave the cam back. The XA was replaced by a Canon QL17.

Back to your series ... I am fascinate by this photo. The view of the lady and the position of here ... great! Well done!

Best

Here is one from my XA. Wide open. Unfortunately it looks like it has some back-focus. But it was just a try. Didn't expect that it went out that good at all, since you be committed to the automatic with the exposure-time.

Haha yes, that's true, he's supposed to have roamed the Götaland area which includes Gotland.

I like this one a lot Adam, very interesting perspective and nice lines.

Ugh a pain to discover that on a scan, though it could probably be spot healed away?

Speaking of dust management, yesterday I tried my old Decca record brush to remove dust from my wet mount plate and the mounted film. Works amazingly well, really a terrific improvement of my workflow. I will also use it on my 35mm film before and after mounting them. I had considered buying an antistatic brush from Kinetronics but now I don't have to.

I probably ought to change the name on this scan to "Friggin' Cat Hairs"!
