Forest with fog and hoarfrost (Leica M4-2, Zeiss Biogon 2/35, Ilford FP4+):

Doc Henry has always used foggy pictures (as well as poppies) to exemplify how the subtle tonal curve of film, correctly exposed and processed, can so effectively be used in a pictorial sense. Your fog pictures bear true testament to that.

If the purpose of a photo is to make you think, not only about the photo, but about your own life, this has to be one of the most magnificent photos I have seen. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks,

Wayne

Thank you very much, Wayne, for your kind words. If the image gave you a nudge or inspiration your subconscious had been waiting for, I’m truly honored. That’s a real honor—one that a humble hobby photographer is rarely granted.

Is the question then to eschew or embrace the monsters? Not that it is either/or.

Rog, may I answer with a little story that happened  5 years ago while hiking in the Malaysian jungle. My wife and me stood on a river bank undoing our shoes in order to cross a shallow river, when our guide, who had taken our back-packs and already stood in the middle of the river suddenly looked back  and shouted: "My friends, big snake is coming at you !"   My wife: " What shall we dooo ?"  Guide: "Run !!! "   We did exactly that.

The second photo is delightful, priceless expressions, so much life shining out. And did you partake?

Thank you, Charles. I had completely forgotten about these photos. But now, seeing the images, the memories come back to life—and so does the taste of the chicha. Yes, I did drink chicha occasionally; there were situations where it would have been very impolite to refuse.

In this particular case shown in the picture, however, I declined—I would have had to use the communal cup. As unsentimental as it may sound, I tried to immerse myself as much as possible in each country I visited, but I never entirely forgot that hepatitis A, amoebic dysentery, and the like are real risks.
