I totally agree! I started with film B&W, including development and retouching medium format (120 / 220) negatives. What amazing results that was. B&W film to me is so much more expressive, more moody than color could ever be. I shoot all digital in color. But, only B&W on film.

I recently saw that a large retail building locally that was undergoing a change of tenant, and to my delight the new folks ("Total Tools"*) were painting the whole thing the most incredibly flamboyant red. I happened to have had a couple of rolls of Velvia 50 in 120 size and an underutilized Rolleiflex available so I went down there on two clear, bright summer evenings to see what I could come up with. The results are a little collection I call "big red" of which this is but one:

big red xvi 2023

rolleiflex 6008i, zeiss 50mm distagon, velvia 50

Hot, hot, hot.

Stone cottage in Val d'Isère, France. [FM3a, Pancro 400]  Too grainy for my liking, this Pancro film.

As you know, Phil, I owned the same camera for only a couple of days, but was blown away by the image quality. Wow! everything's so powerful here, blend of precision, shapes, contrasting details (love the breaks in the curb set against the homogeneity of the wall) and dramatic color.

Thank you sincerely Ken. The 6008i is a wonderful camera - and system - but, as you know, pretty heavy. I find it’s a great system for when you can get close to the action by car and not have to carry it too far - in fact then it’s incomparable. When the lab scans of this series came back (I’ve yet to receive the processed film) my initial thought was that I could be happy just using the Rolleiflex system and Velvia. But, of course, variety is so much more fun. And, really, I think comparable results could be obtained with any good MF camera on a tripod, given the clear, bright and intense light of a summer evening (oh yeah, and Velvia!)
