Question for the team:

Do you guys think super low temperatures have any influence over how film behaves and exposes ?

I am based in Montreal where it has been pretty cold lately ( -20 with wind gusts down to -38 C ).

I did some shooting yesterday in those conditions , a bit of in and out.

Processed the roll at night following my usual routine for this type of film and push.

I obviously allowed the film to warm up to normal room temperatures for few hours before processing it.

The roll turned out ok'ish but looked a bit grainer, underexposed at times. Sort of lo fi'ish I would say.

I shot with Summaron 35mm 2.8 lens which on normal days is blade sharp.

Any thoughts on this ?

thanks and happy holidays.

Sorry for the confusion SP

For the use outside , don't worry . I photograp at minus 15°- 20°C

I am at 3200m near the European mountain summit  ... and no problem

with film and M7 batterie... but as said Chris take care of your fingers

Best

Henry

Yes a bit painful. I have received advice to tape over the gap between the rear of the chimney and the magazine. Apparently light can enter there.

Seeing this from the positive side, though, I might now have a more or less persuasive reason to buy a back-up body :D Decisions, decisions...

Ouch!

Hello Sixteen Pads,

Why don't you contact Michael Hiles who is also in Montreal.

He writes quite a bit in the Film Forum & he might have an idea or 2.

Best Regards,

Michael

very lovely, Henry.

Thank you Wayne

I have the choice to stop shooting because it's too dark and late with  no light at winter 6 pm

or shoot even the lack of light

.... finaly I prefer to shoot and test the Kodak TX in difficult light condition to see its sensitivity

without post process like in digital camera with its software modifying the original atmosphere

... few minutes earlier I have this picture

Kodak TX400-MP-50 Summilux Asph

Nikon Coolscan 5000

Great colors, Frank.  The second is very inviting!

Cherry harvesting.

Just scanning some old stuff again.

A Fuji F-II, now 35 years old, went out quite as fresh as new.

-17.78C, where were you? Not NY ?

Oh yes, it was brutal.  it felt like -30C.  But it makes good shooting material with people decked out in very heavy clothes and looking all distressed!  Like this!

I'm thinking the film would probably be OK, but your meter might wander off and maybe shutter speeds too.

For some reason, the advent of this thread has had a tremendous impact on my enthusiasm and enjoyment of the photo hobby. I find myself wondering about, trying, and feeling pretty uninhibited about showing, various things related to camera, film and lens. I know I have said it before, but feel compelled to thank everyone, again, for indulgence.

I have always been fascinated with the idea of creating photographs that sort of encapsulate a day or experience.......But without really showing, fully, any one particular aspect. A sort of collage, I guess. Something that brings the whole day rushing back to memory. I suppose, to some extent, any photo would do that, but I am thinking of trying to capture just the overall spritit of the day.

The below is an experiment in the concept.

I have written in past about my neighbor, the owner of my dog buddy, Blondie. She is a great beast but spends most of her life on a chain; charged with protecting a lot full of hens and roosters. On those occasions when she breaks loose, I find her standing by my front door, staring mournfully through the window. On this particular day she accompanied on a walk in the woods. it was a great day.
